Falcons Extend Winning Streak to Five After Sweeping the Spartans

DUBUQUE, Iowa – The Falcons brought out the brooms on Monday afternoon. The Concordia Wisconsin women's hockey team completed a three-game road trip at Dubuque with a 1-0 victory. The non-conference victory sends the Falcons to 8-8-0 on the season.

It was all Falcons on Monday and the Birds held a 12-5 advantage in shots after the first period.

Concordia was leading 13-3 in shots in the second period when junior Brooke Gibson (LaSalle, Ont.) scored the lone goal of the contest in the final minute of the second period after she tossed a rebound off a shot from senior Amanda Carney (Ottawa, Ont.) into the back of the net on a secondary assist to junior Amanda Bauer (Waunakee, Wis.).

The Concordia defense held the Spartans to seven shots in the third period to preserve the shutout.

Junior Kami McCardle (Jackson, Wis.) collected 19 saves in her fourth victory and first shutout of the season. Monday was the sixth career shutout for the Wisconsin native.

The CUW defense helped shield the puck away from McCardle all day and finished with eight blocks, with junior Savannah Hutchins (Inver Grove Heights, Minn.) finishing with three blocks.

The Falcons also had a strong performance in the faceoff circle against the Spartans. Freshman Mackaylan McGown (Inver Grove, Minn.) won 13 of her 17 faceoffs and Brooke Gibson won 12 of her 20 faceoffs.

Concordia held a 36-19 advantage in shots and was led by sophomore Makayla Spejcher (Green Bay, Wis.) and Brooke Gibson with five each.

The CUW defense also did not allow a power-play goal for the fourth time in the last five games. Dubuque could not capitalize on any of the three power plays and was held to only three shots on the three opportunities.

The Blue and White have now won five-straight games. The winning streak is the longest since 2021, when the Falcons closed the regular season with four-straight victories and defeated Marian in the NCHA Slaats Cup Quarterfinals.

The Falcons return to Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) play on Friday night for Mental Health Awareness Night against the Green Knights of St. Norbert. The Green Knights are receiving votes in the U.S. College Hockey Online rankings that were released this afternoon and head into the weekend at 12-4-1 and in third place in the NCHA at 7-0-1.
