Falcons Skate to a Tie Against Stevens Point

MEQUON, Wis. – The Concordia Wisconsin women's hockey team rode a rollercoaster of emotions to a 3-3 tie on Monday afternoon inside the Ozaukee Ice Center against the Pointers of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. The tie is the first for both teams on the season as the Falcons move to 8-10-1 and the Pointers move to 5-13-1.

Junior Natalie Mackrell (Stuttgart, Germany) started the scoring when she broke past the defense off passes from freshman Naomi Black (Ottawa, Ontario) and freshman Brenna-Grace Dittmer (Chatham-Kent, Ontario).

The Pointers were able to tie the game on a loose puck later in the first period.

Two minutes later, sophomore Hailey Calliguri (Lonsdale, Minn.) scored her first collegiate goal with a shot from the far circle off passes from sophomore Makayla Spejcher (Green Bay, Wis.) and junior Savannah Hutchins (Inver Grove Heights, Minn.).

The Falcons finished the first period with 19 shots on net.

The Purple and Gold scored the lone goal of the second period to send the teams into the third period tied at two.

Freshman Carolyn Bourgeault (Buffalo, N.Y.) started the third period with some saves on some point-blank opportunities and breakaway shots.

The Falcons reclaimed the lead when Mackrell showed her speed and broke past the defense and sent the puck into the top of the net off an assist from freshman Chanler Taylor (Bloomington, Ill.). The assist was Taylor's first point as a Falcon.

The Pointers tied the game with a sharp-angled goal in the final minute of regulation.

The Falcons had their first penalty of the game in overtime but did not allow a goal on the Pointers' power play.

The two teams then skated to a rare 1-1 tie in the shootout with Carolyn Bourgeault securing a save to start the shootout and junior Amanda Bauer (Waunakee, Wis.) scoring in the third round to secure the second tie of the day.

The Buffalo native finished with a career-high 39 saves in the tie.

The Pointers picked up a 42-39 advantage in shots on Monday. Junior Brooke Gibson (LaSalle, Ontario) led the flock with six shots.

The Falcons dominated the faceoff circle and won 50 of the 74 faceoffs. Junior Erika Graham (Brighton, Mich.) led the contest with 19 victories with Brooke Gibson finishing with 16 and freshman Mackaylan McGown (Inver Grove, Minn.) with 15.

The Concordia defense came up with 12 blocks on Monday and was led by Mackaylan McGown and Savannah Hutchins with two each.

The Pointers are now 3-1-1 against NCHA opponents, with victories over St. Norbert and Marian.

The Falcons return to Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) play on Friday night at Trine for the first of a pair of games in Indiana.
