Falcons Rewrite the Record Book Against Finlandia

MEQUON, Wis. – The Falcons took care of business once again on Friday night inside the Ozaukee Ice Center. The Falcons tamed the Lions of Finlandia with an 8-0 victory to improve to 7-3-1 on the year.

The eight goals are a season-high performance for the Falcons.

Sophomore Brooke Gibson (LaSalle, Ont.) started the scoring in the first period when she skated down the ice and snuck the puck past the near post off a pass from junior Amanda Carney (Aurora, Ont.).

Gibson struck again in the second period at the 15:58 mark off assists from senior Ali Eiden (Rosemount, Minn.) and sophomore Lilly Casher (Grayslake, Ill.).

The Falcons took a 2-0 lead into the third period before the birds blew off the doors.

Brooke Gibson started the scoring with a goal from the circle off of a sophomore Erika Graham (Brighton, Mich.) assist.

Sophomore Amanda Bauer (Waunakee, Wis.) ended the power play drought at the 6:06 mark of the third period off passes from senior Emily Reimche (Billings, Mont.) and sophomore Natalie Mackrell (Stuttgart, Germany).

The power play unit struck again a minute later off the stick of Brooke Gibson on assists from senior Colleen Gilligan (Colbourne, Ont.) and sophomore Olivia Kurtz (Plainfield, Ill.).

Erika Graham lit the lamp a minute later with sophomore Ashlyn Marshall (Vail, Colo.) and Emily Reimche adding the assists on the goal.

Brooke Gibson continued her one-woman performance and broke the program record with her fifth goal of the night and second on the power play off a pass from Natalie Mackrell.

The scoring ended with sophomore Megan Vettraino (Howell, Mich.) scoring 11 seconds later with freshman Makayla Spejcher (Green Bay, Wis.) adding the assists.

The six goals and three power-play goals in the period tied the program record.

Sophomore Kami McCardle (Jackson, Wis.) was a brick wall once again for the Falcons with 23 saves on 23 shots in her season debut.

Friday was the second career shutout for McCardle.

The CUW defense killed off all six penalties.

The Falcons held a 59-23 advantage in shots on Friday. Brooke Gibson led the game with 14 shots. The Canadian also won 12 of her 18 faceoffs to stuff her stat sheet.

Freshman Jillian Tabaka (Maplewood, Minn.) also helped the Falcons maintain possession with 13 faceoff victories on 18 attempts.

Emily Reimche blocked three shots for the Falcons.

The Falcons look to bring out the brooms against the Lions on Saturday evening and close out 2022 in style.
