Softball celebrates senior day sweep

MEQUON, Wis. – The CUW softball senior class recorded their 100th and 101st victories with a sweep over Edgewood. The Falcons improve to 22-9 on the year with the 4-0, 11-3 sweep of Edgewood. The Blue and White remain in first place in the NACC at 17-3. The Falcons can clinch a share of the title with a win Sunday or an MSOE loss.

The Falcons broke open the floodgates in the second inning of game one.

Sophomore Jenna Pozezinski (Lake Villa, Ill.) hit her 10th home run of the season to center field.

Senior Becky Bonnin (Kenosha, Wis.) shined on senior day with a double down the right-field line to score junior Emma Schimberg (Random Lake, Wis.).

Freshman Gina Followell (Romeoville, Ill.) copied Bonnin with a double down the right-field line to score Bonnin.

Gina Followell was mowing down the Eagles and had seven of her eight strikeouts in the first three innings. Followell earned her 10th victory of the season, with only two hits against her.

Junior Molly O'Connell (New London, Wis.) closed the game one scoring with a bang with a solo home run.

Senior Samantha Schumacher (Freedom, Wis.) did not allow a stolen base in game one.

Freshman Krystal Cortes (Aurora, Ill.) started the game-two scoring in the second inning on a ground out that scored Becky Bonnin.

In the third inning, Emma Schimberg singled up the middle to score senior Sara Rosenow (Kimberly, Wis.) and Jenna Pozezinski.

Freshman Taylor Kuske (Kaukauna, Wis.) then doubled to left field to score Emma Schimberg.

Sophomore Heather Renard (Wrightstown, Wis.) struck a single to right field to score Taylor Kuske and Becky Bonnin.

The Eagles entered the scoring with a single in the fourth inning.

CUW responded with a single up the middle from Becky Bonnin to score Sara Rosenow.

Edgewood added two runs in the fifth inning on two ground outs.

Jenna Pozezinski was able to get Molly O'Connell across the plate in the fifth inning on a ground out.

Sara Rosenow then singled to left field to score senior Maddie Zazas (Mundelein, Ill.) and junior Samantha Schloegl (Genoa City, Wis.).

Samantha Schloegl ended the game with the classic walk-off walk with the bases loaded to score Becky Bonnin.

Freshman Nicki Becker (Brodhead, Wis.) notched her sixth victory of the year with three strikeouts.

Becky Bonnin led all hitters in game two with three hits.

The Falcons now only need one win or one MSOE loss to clinch their first regular-season title since 2002.

CUW closes the NACC schedule on Sunday at Rockford. The series was pushed back due to weather on Saturday.
