Softball sweeps Stars

ROSEMONT, Ill. – The Falcons extended their winning streak to five games with a sweep of the Stars of Dominican on Saturday in Illinois. CUW swept the series, 4-1, 5-3 to improve to 10-7 on the year and move into a tie for first place in the NACC at 5-1. The Stars sink to 11-11 and to 2-4 in NACC play.

Defense reigned supreme to start game one. Freshman Gina Followell (Romeoville, Ill.) carried a no hitter into the sixth inning.

The Stars scored a run on a pair of singles to take a 1-0 lead into the seventh inning.

Junior Molly O'Connell (New London, Wis.) started the seventh inning with a double down the right-field line.

Sophomore Jenna Pozezinski (Lake Villa, Ill.) singled to shallow right field to score O'Connell.

Senior Sara Rosenow (Kimberly, Wis.) grounded out and was able to score junior Samantha Schloegl (Genoa City, Wis.).

Senior Maddie Zazas (Mundelein, Ill.) crossed home plate on a wild pitch.

Junior Emma Schimberg (Random Lake, Wis.) closed the scoring on a double to left field to score freshman Baileigh Johnson (Neillsville, Wis.).

Gina Followell only allowed two hits in her fifth victory of the season. She finished the game with seven strikeouts.

Senior Becky Bonnin (Kenosha, Wis.) led all batters in game one with three hits.

Maddie Zazas started the scoring in game two in the top of the first inning with a sacrifice fly to score Molly O'Connell.

Jenna Pozezinski then sent a triple down the right-field line and scored on single from Sara Rosenow.

Dominican cut into the lead with a run in the bottom of the first inning.

The Stars added two more runs in the third inning on a double to take the lead.

Becky Bonnin tied the game in the fourth inning on a single through the left side of the infield to score Sara Rosenow.

Freshman Krystal Cortes (Aurora, Ill.) broke the tie on a single down the right-field line to send home Becky Bonnin and Emma Schimberg.

The CUW defense kept the Stars off the scoreboard in the final four innings.

In the circle, freshman Nicki Becker (Brodhead, Wis.) earned her second victory of the year, with four strikeouts. Freshman Alyssa Vilkoski (Greenfield, Wis.) notched her first save of the season.

Sara Rosenow recorded a game-high two hits in game two.

The Falcons return to play on Sunday at home against Lakeland.
