Zazas breaks school record in WLC softball sweep

MILWAUKEE, Wis. – The CUW softball team picked up two important victories in the NACC race with a 5-4, 9-4 sweep at Wisconsin Lutheran. A highlight of the day was Maddie Zazas breaking the school record for career hits. The sweep propels the Blue and White to 17-8 on the season and to 12-2 in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference. Wisconsin Lutheran falls to 17-11 and 7-7 in NACC play. The Falcons improve to 30-14 all-time against Wisconsin Lutheran and earn the first series sweep against WLC since 2012.

The Falcons struck first on Friday with a single in the first inning off the bat of sophomore Jenna Pozezinski (Lake Villa, Ill.) to left field to score senior Maddie Zazas (Mundelein, Ill.).

The Warriors tied the game in the second inning on a ground out.

The Green and White added three more runs in the fourth inning and took a 4-1 lead into the seventh inning.

The Falcons fought back once again.

Senior Becky Bonnin (Kenosha, Wis.) started the rally on a single down the right-field line to score senior Sara Rosenow (Kimberly, Wis.)

Down to the last out and trailing 2-4, junior Molly O'Connell (New London, Wis.) doubled to right field to score freshman Taylor Kuske (Kaukauna, Wis.) and Becky Bonnin.

Maddie Zazas gave the Falcons the lead on a single up the middle to score Molly O'Connell.

After the leadoff runner was able to get to third base the Falcons' defense stiffened and got the final out to win.

Freshman Gina Followell (Romeoville, Ill.) had another strong outing in the circle. She earned her eighth victory with nine strikeouts and only two hits.

Maddie Zazas led the flock with two of the seven hits.

The Blue and White took the lead in the first inning again in game two.

A sacrifice fly from Maddie Zazas scored Molly O'Connell.

Zazas struck again in the third inning on a single down the right-field line that scored junior Samantha Schloegl (Genoa City, Wis.).

The Falcons added two more runs in the third inning.

Sara Rosenow scored Maddie Zazas on a sacrifice fly and junior Emma Schimberg (Random Lake, Wis.) singled to right-center field to score freshman Baileigh Johnson (Neillsville, Wis.).

The Green and White cut the lead in half in the fourth inning with two runs on two signals.

In the sixth inning, sophomore Heather Renard (Wrightstown, Wis.) double to center field to score Molly O'Connell, freshman Jillian Gardner and Taylor Kuske.

Jenna Pozezinski then scored Samantha Schloegl on a sacrifice fly.

WLC added two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Molly O'Connell closed the Good Friday scoring on a single to center field that was able to get Emma Schimberg across home plate.

The sixth inning saw Maddie Zazas single through the left side of the infield to break the school record with her 182nd hit. Passing Tara Wagner, who established the record in 2009.

Freshman Nicki Becker (Brodhead, Wis.) earned her fourth victory of the year in the circle. Freshman Alyssa Vilkoski (Greenfield, Wis.) picked up three strikeouts as well.

Molly O'Connell led CUW with three hits in game two.

The Falcons will host a key series against Benedictine on Saturday.
