Men's Volleyball Completes the Sweep Over the Sabres

FOND DU LAC, Wis. – The CUW men's volleyball team extended their win streak to five games on Tuesday with a 3-0 win over the Sabres of Marian University with scores of 25-20, 25-20, and 28-26 to improve 7-5 on the season and 3-0 in conference play.

The first set saw CUW take a 9-6 lead after senior Andy Ellingham (Burlington, Wis.) beat the Marian defense for a service ace.

The Falcons would continue their early momentum to take a seven-point margin at 17-10 as sophomore Will Wood (Savage, Minn.) and Andy Ellingham both recorded kills on assists from junior Logan Kebisek (Brookfield, Wis.).

A kill from junior Lucas Beres (Germantown, Wis.) stopped a comeback effort from the Sabres to settle the score at 21-18.

The Falcons would hold their advantage over the Sabres until set point, as a swing from Will Wood, on a pass from sophomore Tate Miller (Anthem, Ariz.) earned the Blue and White the first set victory, 25-20.

The second frame played to a similar tune as the first, as the score was tight after the first points as a kill from Tate Miller pushed the score to 6-6.

From then on, the Falcons went on a 6-1 run to force a Marian timeout.

Out the break, Concordia carried their momentum and recorded back-to-back kills courtesy of senior Spencer Herman (Kimberly, Wis.) and Lucas Beres

Later in the set, kills from Spencer Herman and Will Wood sent the score to 20-13 in favor of Concordia.

A pair of Marian service errors and a kill from Spencer Herman and Tate Miller brought up set point.

Lucas Beres would lock up the second set for CUW at 25-20 following a kill.

Determined to sweep the Sabres, the Flacons kept their focus out of the break and established a solid 4-0 lead as Spencer Herman recorded two kills while Tate Miller had one.

Later in the set, a kill from Spencer Herman and Tate Miller would extend the lead to six, 11-5.

However, the Sabres would chip away and eventually tie the game at 20-20.

After Marian took a one-point lead, Spencer Herman would answer with a kill to level the score at 21-21.

Looking to pick up the home win, the Sabres continued to battle and took a two-point lead, bringing up set point as they led CUW at 24-22.

But again, Herman would answer the call and bring the Falcons within one.

Out of a Marian timeout, freshman Zach Koeferl (Germantown, Wis.) delivered a clutch point as he found the court for a service ace to knot the score at 24 apiece.

The score would continue to be tied with the score at 26-26 as Spencer Herman and Logan Kebisek both had kills to tie the score after Marian took the slim lead.

The Falcons would complete the sweep and secure the 28-26 third-set victory as Marian had two attacking errors.

In the win, Logan Kebisek surpassed the 2,000-assist mark and became the first-ever player in program history to reach that milestone, recording 32 assists in the effort.

Defensively, Logan Kebisek also recorded the lone CUW solo block of the night, while Lucas Beres had a game-high eight block assists.

Sophomore Parker Pearson (Keller, Texas) led the Falcons with 14 digs.

On the offensive side of the net, Spencer Herman recorded a game-high 17 kills and 20 points.

Meanwhile, Lucas Beres registered a .500 hitting percentage, recording six kills on 12 attempts.

From the service line, Tate Miller had a game-high three aces.

The Falcons will look to make it six straight on Thursday, Feb. 29th, when they host the Cougars of Concordia Chicago at 7 p.m.
