Falcons close 2019 in winning fashion

ST. CLOUD, Minn. – The CUW men's hockey team closed 2019 with a 7-5 victory at St. John's of Minnesota on Sunday afternoon. The victory sends the Falcons to 6-4-1 on the season.

"The boys showed incredible resilience tonight," said head coach Jasen Wise. "To go on the road after final is a challenge and I thought that our boys handled it well. It should make for a good break off for all the boys."

Junior Braydon Barker (Red Deer, Alta.) broke open the scoring 106 seconds into the game. Freshman Brandon Picard (Montreal, Que.) and sophomore Luc Kreuser (Wisconsin Rapids, Wis.) had the assists on the opening goal.

Ryan Kero scored the next two goals to give St. John's the lead.

Junior Nick Guerra (Victoria, B.C.) slid past the SJU keeper late in the first period off passes from junior Nick Guiney (Victoria, B.C.) and sophomore Cory Dennis (Madison, Wis.).

Nick Guerra put CUW ahead at the 3:09 mark of the second period off passes from Braydon Barker and sophomore Thomas Dyball (Papillion, Neb.).

The Johnnies tied the game six minutes later on the power play.

Sophomore Brandon MacKinnon (Etobicoke, Ont.) found the back of the net with a short-handed goal on a two-on-one advantage off a pass from sophomore Jacob Palmerio (Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.).

St. John's recorded the next two goals to take the lead at the 7:37 mark of the third period.

Nick Guiney lit the lamp to tie the game off a pass from senior Dante Hahn (Victoria, B.C.).

Senior Jim Pearson (Ashton, Ont.) gave the Falcons the lead 78 seconds later, with senior Josh Adkins (Victoria, B.C.) and junior Cole Pickup (Victoria, B.C.) adding the assists.

Dante Hahn wrapped the bow on the victory with an empty net goal.

Sophomore Erik Schuette (Olathe, Kan.) earned his first collegiate victory with 44 saves on Sunday.

St. John's held a 49-29 shots advantage on Sunday.

Braydon Barker led the flock with eight shots.

Dante Hahn won 14 of his 21 faceoffs against St. John's.

The Falcons will have some time off and will host Finlandia on Jan. 3.
