Men’s Volleyball Trio Breaks Career Records at MSOE

MILWAUKEE, Wis. – The CUW men's volleyball team rewrote the history books Tuesday night as three Falcons set career records.

Senior Spencer Herman (Kimberly, Wis.) set the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) record for kills in a career. Herman totaled 13 kills in the match, bringing his career total to 1,050, breaking the record set by Concordia Chicago's Luke Vozenilek.

Meanwhile, junior Lucas Beres (Germantown, Wis.) recorded four block assists in the effort. As a result, Beres set the CUW men's volleyball career record for total blocks and block assists, as he now has 195 career block assists and 228 total blocks, breaking Blake Schwandt's previous records.

Senior Andy Ellingham set the career record for solo blocks, recording one in the third set, bringing his career total to 34, surpassing the record set by Blake Schwandt.

Despite the record-setting night, the Falcons lost in three sets to the Raiders of MSOE, dropping them to 8-6 overall and 4-1 in conference play.

In the first frame, a kill from sophomore Will Wood (Savage, Minn.) gave CUW the early 6-5 lead.

But determined to defend home court, the Raiders gradually retook the lead at 18-13.

But the Falcons would string together a 4-1 run to cut the deficit to two behind the kill from senior Spencer Herman (Kimberly, Wis.) and a service ace from senior Andy Ellingham (Burlington, Wis.), forcing an MSOE timeout.

After the timeout, the Raiders regrouped and narrowly won the first set, 25-20.

Near the midway point of the second set, the Falcons, behind a kill from Spencer Herman, put the score at 12-8 in favor of the Raiders.

Once again, however, MSOE was able to respond and build a lead at 21-13.

Following a CUW timeout, the Falcons strung together a 4-0 run as Andy Ellingham, Tate Miller, and Spencer Herman all had kills, and the score now sat at 21-17 in the Raiders' favor.

But the Raiders would stop the CUW run and pull out the second-set victory.

The third set started with the Falcons cutting the deficit to one at 6-7, as Spencer Herman had a kill on a pass from junior Logan Kebisek (Brookfield, Wis.).

Another kill from Spencer Herman later in the set would bring the score to 12-10 in MSOE's favor.

MSOE then went on a 6-2 run to bring the score to 18-12 in their advantage before taking the final set 25-19.

In the loss, Spencer Herman had a team-high 13 kills and 14 points, Logan Kebisek had 21 assists, and Lucas Beres had two service aces.

Beres also had a team-high four block assists, while sophomore Tate Miller (Anthem, Ariz.) had 10 digs.

The Falcons will look to return to the win column on Saturday as they return to the R. John Buuck Fieldhouse to host the formidable opponent in the Stars of Dominican University.
