Men's Tennis drops non-conference match against Cardinal Stritch

GLENDALE, Wis. – Seniors Russell Johnson and Skip Turner each posted 2-0 records, including winning a No. 1 doubles match together, but it was not enough as the Concordia University Wisconsin Men's Tennis team was defeated by Cardinal Stritch University Wednesday. The Wolves gained a 6-3 win at the Paley Tennis Center.

Johnson (Monticello, Minn.) and Turner (Eau Claire, Wis.) gained the Falcons lone win in doubles play, battling the Wolves No. 1 team of Raymond Weich and George Watson. The CUW pair was able to edge out an 8-6 win, keeping its team within one point heading into singles play.

The other two doubles matches went quickly as Cardinal Stritch rolled at No. 2 and No. 3. The Wolves won 8-2 at No. 2 doubles, while gaining an 8-1 win at No. 3 doubles.

In singles play it was again Johnson and Turner who led the Falcons as both players picked up wins in straight sets. Both matches were close, beginning with Johnson at No. 1 singles as he defeated Jimmy Le 6-5, 7-5. Turner followed suit at No. 2 singles with a 7-5, 6-4 win.

CSU (6-7) easily controlled the remaining singles matches, dropping a total of just five points over eight sets. Watson was dominant in his No. 3 singles match for the Wolves, winning 6-0, 6-0.

CUW (1-4) will return to action Friday, March 7 when they visit UW-Oshkosh for a non-conference match. The Falcons and Titans will begin play 7 p.m.
