MESA, Ariz. - It was a day for the
dramatic at Snedigar Park, as both games of a doubleheader against
William Paterson University were decided in walk-off fashion. The
Pioneers earned a 7-6 victory on a walk-off three-run home run in
the bottom of the seventh inning, prior to the Falcons scoring a
7-6 win of their own on a Matt Schroeder walk-off infield single in
the bottom of the seventh.
In the opener WPU rallied
in the bottom of the seventh inning with six runs on six hits. The
Pioneers put together five consecutive singles and had runners at
first and second for Adam Derner who smashed the first pitch of his
at-bat over the right field fence.
CUW took its turn to win in
dramatic fashion during the nightcap by scoring four runs in the
bottom of the seventh frame off just one hit and capitalizing on
three errors. With runners at first and third, Schroeder pushed
Matt Parrent across the plate after singling on a 1-1 pitch through
to the left side of the infield. The win was the Falcons first of
the season.
Game One Recap:
CUW's offense found its rhythm by
pounding out 14 hits. The Falcons pounded out four doubles and a
triple during the contest.
Sarauer, Martz and Parrent
(senior, Kewaskum, Wis.) led the offense with three hits apiece,
while Sarauer and Martz each drove in a pair. Sophomore Beau
Burgert (Oshkosh, Wis.) scored twice in the defeat.
A.J. Flores recorded a team-high
two hits for WPU and Ryan Gibbons scored twice.
After WPU plated a run in the
opening inning, CUW responded with three runs in the third frame
and single runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings to take a
6-1 lead.
Two outs had been recorded in the
seventh inning before the unprecedented WPU rally began. The
Pioneers singled five consecutive times before Derner approached
the plate as a pinch hitter. It didn't take long for him to end the
game, as he sent the first pitch he saw over the right field fence
for a game-winning three-run homer.
Senior Ryan Baglow (Walled Lake,
Mich.) took the loss on the mound after giving up six runs, all
earned, on six hits in 0.2 innings of work.
Ryan Monahgan picked up the win
in relief after striking out two in 1.1 innings of work.
Game Two Recap:
Doedens and sophomore Mathew
Scasny (Pewaukee, Wis.) each had two hits and Martz crossed the
plate twice for CUW. Doedens led all players with three RBI.
WPU had four players reach twice
on base hits.
The teams exchanged runs in the
second frame before WPU scored three unanswered to take a 4-1 lead
after five innings of play.
CUW scored two runs in the bottom
of the sixth on a Doedens single and a Daniel Mueller (junior, West
Bend, Wis.) groundout. The Pioneers plated two runs on back-to-back
singles to take a 6-3 lead with a half inning to play.
At that point the Falcons took
advantage of Pioneer fielding and throwing mistakes to earn the
come-from-behind victory. Burgert walked to begin the inning before
three straight WPU errors allowed two runs to score.
Sophomore Harry Steldt (West
Bend, Wis.) advanced Martz and Parrent to second and third on a
sacrifice bunt prior to Doedens' sacrifice fly to center field,
which scored Martz, to tie the game at 6-6. Mueller earned a
five-pitch walk to put runners at first and third.
After taking a ball and strike,
Schroeder hit a chopper to the Pioneers shortstop and beat out the
throw to give CUW its first victory of the year.
Parrent was 1-for-1 as a pinch
hitter in the win and concluded the doubleheader 3-for-5 after
starting in left field in the opening game of the twin bill.
Junior Glen Meyerhofer (Kaukauna,
Wis.) earned the win with two innings of scoreless
relief.
On the day senior Adam Martz (West Bend, Wis.)
led CUW with four hits and three runs scored. Schroeder (freshman,
Mequon, Wis.) and senior Nick Doedens (Germantown, Wis.) drove in
three runs apiece. Senior Austin Sarauer (Cambellsport, Wis.) led
all Falcons with six total bases.
WPU (10-3) had four batters tally
four hits apiece, while Ryan Gibbons and Derner crossed the plate
