Baseball falls in doubleheader against Thomas

MESA, Ariz. - Concordia University Wisconsin
held a two-run lead entering the seventh inning, but Thomas College
scored twice to force an extra inning. The Terriers ripped a RBI
single down the left field line to conclude a doubleheader sweep,
10-5 and 7-6, at the RussMatt Greater Phoenix Invitational at Gene
Autry Park.
TC (2-2) took a commanding
7-0 lead after three-and-a-half innings of play in the opener and
held on for the victory. The Terriers batted around the order and
plated five runs in the fourth frame to take control.
In the second game of the twin
bill, it was CUW who scored five runs in an inning to take a 5-3
lead of its own. The Falcons could not hold on as the Terriers
scored in the final three innings to earn the sweep.
Sophomore Mathew Scasny
(Pewaukee, Wis.) and freshman Matt Schroeder (Mequon, Wis.) led the
Falcons offense with three hits apiece and two runs. All of
Schroeder's base hits were doubles, while senior Adam Martz (West
Bend, Wis.) drove in three runs.
Ethan Hurley and Wes Perreault led the Terriers with
four hits apiece, while three players scored three times. Jeff
Richardson led all batters with four RBI.
Game One Recap:
The Falcons had eight players
record a hit in the game and four recorded a RBI. Senior Ryan
Baglow (Walled Lake, Mich.) led the pitching staff with three
strikeouts in one inning of work.
TC plated a run in the second and
third innings before sending five runs across the plate in the top
of the fourth inning to take a 7-0 lead. CUW answered with a pair
of runs to cut the deficit to 7-2 in its half of the frame. Senior
Austin Sarauer (Campbellsport, Wis.) drove in one of the runs after
smashing a 1-0 pitch to right field for a triple.
The Falcons tallied a run in the
fifth, sixth and seventh frames, but the Terriers answered to keep
their advantage at five runs the rest of the way.
Danny Burke picked up the win
after throwing six innings and striking out four.
Sophomore Andrew Mueller (Horicon, Wis.) was tagged
with the loss after giving up seven runs, six earned, in 3.1
innings of work. He walked two, hit a batter and threw a wild
pitch.
Game Two Recap:
CUW (0-6) turned a 3-1 deficit
into a 6-3 lead in the top of the fifth inning by sending five runs
across the plate. The Falcons batted around the order and recorded
three hits, two doubles, two walks, a hit-by-pitch and a bunt
sacrifice.
The Terriers again had an answer
by scoring in each of the last three innings to earn a
come-from-behind win. They scored their sixth run on a groundout
and tied the game on a wild pitch.
In the extra frame, Joshua Gray
reached on a single and advanced to second on a bunt sacrifice by
Hurley. Rob Nutter laced a game-winning RBI single down the left
field line of a 1-2 pitch.
Eric Sucy picked up the win in
relief after throwing two innings of two-hit ball.
Freshman Dylan Hinckley (West
Bend, Wis.) was given the loss after giving up three hits and one
run in relief.

CUW returns to action on
Thursday at 3 p.m. (PST) against Williams Paterson University in a
doubleheader at Snedigar Park. The game was originally schedule as
a single game, but was changed to a doubleheader because of
Sunday's rainout game.
