Haegler finishes first, Women's Cross Country third at home meet

MEQUON, Wis. – Senior Marya Haegler finished in first place while leading the Concordia University Wisconsin Women's Cross Country team to a third-place finish at the Ken Weidt Classic Saturday. The Falcons had three runners finish in the top 10 at their home meet.

Falcons head coach Russ De Lap on his team's performance today: "We did really well and were even less than 100 percent as a team. Marya Haegler had a monster race, while Scheele, Sprotte, Kulberg, Ward and Schlitz all had very good races. Both of our teams will learn from today and will come back with more determination and smarter racing."

HOW IT HAPPENED

- Haegler (West Bend, Wis.) was dominant en route to running a 23:17.2. She finished 27 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher.

- Junior Ashley Scheele (Kohler, Wis.) ran to a fourth-place finish, running a 23:58.3. She was followed closely by sophomore Cassandra Sprotte (Abbotsford, Wis.) who placed seventh after posting a time of 24:27.7.

- The Falcons final two scoring runners were senior Larissa Schlitz (DeForest, Wis.) and freshman Becca Wert (North Aurora, Ill.) Schlitz clocked in at 25:27.5, while Wert ran the 6K in 25:27.9.

- CUW had two other runners' post times under 26 minutes in junior Lindsey Fratzke (Winona, Minn.) and freshman Sara Kieselhorst (Waukesha, Wis.) Fratzke ran a 25:43.2, while Kieselhorst recorded a 25:58.5.

ABOUT THE RACE

- Lawrence University won the team title by having all five scoring runners finish in the top 20. They scored 49 points, 13 ahead of runner-up, UW-Stevens Point. The Falcons were just five points behind UWSP.

-CUW had three of the top four NACC runners in the race in Haegler, Scheele and Sprotte.

NOTABLES

- De Lap mentioned sophomores Martha Kulberg (Maple Grove, Minn.) and Emily Ward (Burlington, Wis.) as runners who posted strong races. Kulberg finished the 6K in 26:20.2, while Ward posted a time of 27:53.6

UP NEXT

- The Falcons have a week off before running in the Roy Griak Invitational on Saturday, September 26. The meet is hosted by the University of Minnesota and the Falcons men will be running at 9:00 a.m.
