Women's Cross Country downs MSOE in season-opening meet

MEQUON, Wis. – The Concordia University Wisconsin Women's placed 10 runners inside the top 11 in rolling past MSOE is a season-opening dual meet. The Falcons nearly scored the minimum 15 points in a meet, finishing with just 16 by placing five runners in the top six.

The BASICS

- Location: Concordia University Wisconsin – Mequon, Wis.
- Results: CUW 16, MSOE 47

HOW IT HAPPENED

- The Falcons were dominant as their five scoring runners placed inside the top six, including having the top four finishers. CUW continued its dominance at the top with 10 runners inside the top 11.

- Marya Haegler (West Bend, Wis.) won the race in a time of 11:50, 23 seconds ahead of second place.

- The next three Falcons, finishing in second through fourth place, was sophomore Cassandra Sprotte (Abbotsford, Wis.) at 12:13, junior Ashley Scheele (Kohler, Wis.) at 12:18 and freshman Becca Wert (North Aurora, Ill.) at 12:22.

- The final scoring runner for the Falcons was junior Lindsey Fratzke (Winona, Minn.), who completed the course in 12:45

NOTABLES

- Several Falcons took a lot of time off their previous two mile times. Sophomore Martha Kulberg (Maple Grove, Minn.) ran a 13:25, which was a 1:26 improvement, while senior Jessica Rice (Canton, Mich.) ran a 13:40, which was 1:07 off her previous two mile.

- Sophomore Emily Ward (Burlington, Wis.) had a huge improvement from her August trial, running 2:11 faster. Ward posted a time of 14:25 in the race and posted a big improvement after battling injuries over the past couple years.

THE OPPOSITION

- Freshman Grace Butkus was the top finishing Raider, as she placed fifth with a time of 12:35.

UP NEXT

- The Falcons are off until next Saturday when they host the Ken Weidt Classic on the campus of Concordia University Wisconsin. The women's race is set for 11 a.m.
