Women's Tennis Competes at ITA Regionals

SAINT PETER, Minn. – The CUW women's tennis team had individuals compete at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Women's Midwest Regional Championship and at the Gustie Invite on Friday. The region represents schools from Iowa, Minnesota and Wisconsin.

CUW had three student-athletes in the ITA Regional Championship.

Junior Ashley Samuta (Glen Ellyn, Ill.) opened the singles competition against Jania Carter-Johnson of Coe where she picked up a 6-3, 6-1 victory. She then knocked out Georgia Nissen of Wartburg, 6-1, 6-0. No. 9 Xingchen Liu of Carthage ended the run with a 6-1, 6-2 victory.

Sophomore Cheyanne Phillips (Morris, Ill.) took on No. 4 Allison Szalay of Gustavus Adolphus in the second round. Szalay secured a 6-0, 6-0 victory to advance.

Junior Mallory Moen (Neenah, Wis.) started the singles competition against Raquel Egge of Concordia Moorhead. Egge advanced with a 6-3, 6-3 victory.

The team of Ashley Samuta and Mallory Moen fought No. 9 Julia Baber and Lauryn Douglas of Bethel and won 8-6. The duo then dunked on Dosser and Renwick of St. Mary's, 8-4. Gustavus ended the run with the team of Laux and DeBruijn winning, 8-5.

Three Falcons also competed in the Gustavus Fall Invite on Friday.

Sophomore Peyton Morgan (Arlington Heights, Ill.) started against Gracie O'Donnell of Wartburg in Draw No. 2. Morgan advanced with an 8-7 (4) victory, but was bounced, 8-6 in the second round.

In Draw No. 4, sophomore Mya Werning (Watertown, Wis.) opened play against Lexi Hastings of Luther but fell, 8-4.

Senior Mia Andrae (Cedarburg, Wis.) competed in Draw No. 5 and took on Faith Leithold of Wisconsin-Stevens Point in the first round. Leithold walked away with an 8-1 victory.

Cheyanne Phillips and Mya Werning competed in the No. 3 Doubles Draw in Minnesota and took on Talia Chait and Mimi O'Connell of Macalester. No scores were posted at the time of the recap.

The Falcons continue action on Saturday at Lakeland.
