No. 8/9 UW-Superior shuts out Women's Hockey

SUPERIOR, Wis. – No. 8/9 UW-Superior scored a pair of power-play goals in the second period and two more markers in the final frame to defeat Concordia University Wisconsin on Friday night at Siinto S. Wessman Arena.

The Yellowjackets outshot the Falcons 33-19 and converted 2-of-3 power plays to earn the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association victory. CUW (0-6-2, 0-4-2 NCHA) had five power-play opportunities, but failed to find the back of the net with the skater advantage.

Kerry Mayhew scored less than four minutes into the second 20 minutes of action to give UW-S (5-3-0, 3-2-0 NCHA) a 1-0 advantage. Kaiti Graham and Dani Schultz assisted on the power-play score.

Sheryl Kaskiw tallied an unassisted power-play goal at 18:14 in the same period to push the Yellowjackets lead to 2-0.

Kelsey Firkus found her rhythm in the final frame with a pair of goals. The first of her two markers came at 4:12 and was assisted by Hayley Epema. Firkus scored with less than four minutes to play off assists from Karen Larson and Mara Teschendorf.

Falcons sophomore goalie Kaitlyn Evans (Fairbanks, Alaska) recorded 29 saves in the loss, while her counterpart Shanley Peterson made 19 saves.

The two teams finish the two-game NCHA series on Saturday at 2 p.m.
