Power play conversions keep Women's Hockey alive, tie Lake Forest

MEQUON, Wis. -- A late third frame goal kept Concordia University Wisconsin's hopes alive against Lake Forest College on Tuesday night at the Ozaukee Ice Center, but ultimately it was not enough for the victory. The final result was a 2-2 tie during Northern Collegiate Hockey Association women's hockey contest.

CUW (0-5-2, 0-3-2 NCHA) fell behind when LFC (1-1-1, 1-1-1 NCHA) freshman Logan Taylor notched a power-play goal with 12:59 left in the opening period. After a hooking penalty by the Foresters, the Falcons capitalized on a power-play opportunity of their own when freshman Chelsea Regan (Oakdale, Minn.) fired a shot on goal to tie the game at 1-1 entering the second frame.

The Foresters regained the lead with 11:32 left in second period on a goal by Maeve Connelly, which was assisted by Erin Shamley. With a 2-1 advantage, the Foresters began playing much more aggressive, remaining in the Falcons zone for much of the second stanza.

Power play opportunities have not been kind to CUW thus far in the season, as it has managed to only convert on 6-of-33 chances, but this was not the case this evening. After scoring on their first power play opportunity in the initial frame, sophomore Erin Grant (Allen Park, Mich.) launched in a goal off a ferocious rebounded shot by senior Sara Cole (Plymouth, Minn.), who was credited on the assist, to tie the game 2-2 in the final period. With no team breaking the tie prior to the end of the final period, the two teams played five extra minutes.

The Falcons were able to outshoot the Foresters 5-1 in the overtime period, but were unable to pull away with the victory, earning their second tie of the season. LFC goalkeeper Jenna Brankin managed 39 saves on the evening compared to CUW sophomore goalkeeper Kaitlyn Evans' (Fairbanks, Alaska) 25.

The Falcons travel to UW-Superior this Friday for a two-game NCHA series. The puck will drop at 7:00 p.m.
