Softball winning streak snapped by Aurora in NACC twinbill

AURORA, Ill. – The Concordia University Wisconsin Softball team saw its 12-game winning streak come to an end Sunday via a doubleheader setback against NACC unbeaten Aurora University. Both the Spartans and Falcons entered the day unbeaten in conference play, but only Aurora left with an unblemished record, winning the games by scores of 10-1 and 11-8.

It took too long for the Falcons bats to get going Sunday as they scored eight times over their final three innings in the game two, 11-8 setback. Facing a potential loss via the eight-run rule for a second straight game, CUW got going with six runs in the fifth inning.

Freshmen Dena Guthrie (Bloomingdale, Ill.) and Jamie Reiser (Ingleside, Ill.) each had a two-RBI hit in the six-run fifth for the Falcons. Guthrie got the Falcons on the board with a two-run double, while Reiser capped off the inning with a two-run single. Sophomore Carly Sobrilsky (Brookfield, Wis.), who finished game two with a pair of hits, added a two-RBI single in the seventh inning for the Falcons.

The CUW offense recorded nine hits in the game two as freshman Sadie Strasser (Gladstone, Mich.) added a pair of hits in the setback. Freshman Christine Sharon (Cornell, Mich.) and Strasser each scored a pair of runs from the 1-2 spots in the order.

Aurora built a 10-0 lead after four innings in the second game, thanks in large part to a six-run fourth inning. The Spartans 2-5 hitters in the lineup all recorded a pair of RBI. One of those players was Larkin Langston who belted a home run for the Spartans, as did Vanessa Wegner.

The opener was all Spartans as they jumped out to a 7-0 lead after two innings and added three more in the fourth for a 10-1, five-inning win. Amie Raynor hit a home run and led Aurora with three RBI, while Mandey Shrader added a home run of her own.

The lone Falcons run of the opener came in the top of the fifth inning when freshman Andrea Thiry (Green Bay, Wis.) hit a double, scoring freshman Deidra Weinberger (Mayville, Wis.). The Falcons had just four hits in the opener, two of those coming off the bat of freshman Haley Spoerl (Salem, Wis.).

CUW (19-9, 10-2 NACC) will return to action Tuesday with a NACC twinbill against Wisconsin Lutheran College. The games, which will begin at 3 p.m., will be played at the CUW Softball Field, but the Warriors will be the home team. The doubleheader was moved to CUW due to construction happening at the Warriors home park.
