Perkins shutout helps Softball split on second day of spring trip

CLERMONT, Fla. – Junior Melissa Perkins tossed her second shutout of the season in helping the Concordia University Wisconsin Softball team to a split for the second straight day in Florida. The Falcons defeated Ripon by a 3-0 score before falling to Smith, 9-3.

Perkins (Park Forest, Ill.) struck out eight batters, while allowing seven hits in the complete game effort. The win was her third of the season as she ran her record to 3-1. She has a win or save in all four of the Falcons victories this season.

Freshman Christine Sharon (Cornell, Mich.) paced the offensive attack with a triple against Ripon, which drove in sophomore Alexis Holsten (Oshkosh, Wis.) in the third inning, giving the Falcons a 2-0 lead. Sadie Strasser (Gladstone, Mich.) put the Falcons up 1-0 in the first after scoring on a wild pitch.

CUW (4-4) would extend its lead to 3-0 in the sixth as freshman Haley Spoerl (Salem, Wis.) recorded an RBI groundout, plating Sharon. CUW finished with just four hits in the first game, one each from Strasser, Holsten, Sharon and sophomore Carly Sobrilsky (Brookfield, Wis.).

In game two, Smith jumped out to a 7-1 lead after three innings and never looked back en route to the 9-3 win. Smith finished the game with five doubles as Sarah Tully paced the offensive with a 2-for-2, three-RBI performance.

Senior Felicia Meyer (Winona, Minn.) took the loss in game two, pitching 2.1 innings. Freshman Emily Brekke (Waterford, Wis.) pitched the final 3.2 innings for the Falcons.

Freshman Deidra Weinberger (Mayville, Wis.) paced the CUW attack in game two with a two-hit performance, including a double. Andrea Thiry (Green Bay, Wis.), Allison Peters (Elk Grove, Ill.) and Strasser all added hits in the game, with Strasser and Weinberger driving in runs.

CUW will be back in action tomorrow with a pair of games. The Falcons will take on Macalester at 1 pm (EST) and follow that against nationally ranked St. Thomas at 3. Live stats will be available for the Macalester game.
