Softball extends winning streak to 10 after sweep over Rockford

ROCKFORD, Ill. – The Concordia University Wisconsin Softball team continued its winning ways Monday with a NACC doubleheader sweep over Rockford. The Falcons winning streak has reached 10 following the 4-0 and 9-1 wins.

In the opening game sophomore Melissa Perkins (Park Forest, Ill.) continued her impressive stretch in the circle as she set a career-high for strikeouts for the second time over the past week. Perkins fanned 10 Rockford hitters, while allowing two hits in her third shutout of the season. The righthander has now started four NACC games this season and tossed complete games in each. She has pitched 30 innings in conference play and has posted a 4-0 record with a 0.70 ERA.

The Falcons jumped on the board with a run in the first after an RBI single from junior Alexis Holsten (Oshkosh, Wis.). CUW would then add two in the second, one of those coming on an RBI single from freshman Christine Sharon (Cornell, Mich.), making the score 3-0.

The Falcons and Regents would trade zeros on the scoreboard until the top of the sixth inning when sophomore Carly Sobrilsky (Brookfield, Wis.) belted her fourth home run of the season, giving her team a 4-0 lead. Sobrilsky finished the game with two hits, the home run and a double, while Sharon and freshman Sadie Strasser (Gladstone, Mich.) each had two hits from the top of the Falcons lineup. Freshman Deidra Weinberger (Mayville, Wis.) added a double in the opener.

Sarah Moritz pitched a complete game as well for the Regents in a losing effort. Moritz scattered 10 hits, while allowing four run, two earned. She struck out five and walked two in seven innings of work.

The Falcons would complete the sweep with thanks to a five-run top of the sixth inning, which ran their lead from 3-0 to 8-0. The doubleheader shutout would go out the way in the bottom of the sixth inning, but CUW would get that run back for a 9-1 game two win.

Freshman Alison Peters (Elk Grove, Ill.) had three hits in game two, including a triple and a double, while Sharon had two hits and drove in a game-high three runs.

Freshman Emily Brekke (Waterford, Wis.) tossed another gem for the Falcons, allowing one unearned run. She struck out four batters and walked one to move her record to 6-3 on the season. Her counterpart, Brittany Bura, lasted until the sixth inning, throwing 5.1 innings and allowing four earned runs.

Strasser and Sobrilsky each added a pair of hits for the Falcons in the game two win. Sobrilsky also doubled as did freshman Haley Spoerl (Salem, Wis.) as CUW collected 11 hits in the nightcap.

CUW (17-7, 8-0 NACC) will return to action Wednesday in a NACC doubleheader against Wisconsin Lutheran College. The Falcons and Warriors were originally scheduled to play in Milwaukee, but the game has been moved to the CUW Softball Field. The Falcons will be the road team on the scoreboard still and the doubleheader will begin at 3 p.m.
