Spartans Escape on Senior Day

MEQUON, Wis. – The NACC Champions received their toughest test of the NACC schedule on Saturday afternoon when the Spartans traveled to Concordia. The Spartans escaped with a 39-28 victory, the closest NACC game the Spartans had all season.

The Spartans jumped out to a 14-0 lead after the first quarter.

The Falcons got on the scoreboard in the second quarter with a 26-yard pass to senior Rico Griffin (Chicago, Ill.) from sophomore Michael Purkey (Woodstock, Ill.).

Purkey then connected with senior Tim Houlihan (Lockport, Ill.) on a six-yard pass.

After an Aurora touchdown, CUW tied the game 27 seconds before halftime with a 12-yard touchdown to Rico Griffin.

The Falcons took the lead in the third quarter on a 65-yard blast from Purkey to Tim Houlihan.

The Spartans secured the victory with 18 points in the fourth quarter.

Michael Purkey threw for 352 yards on 19 completions and four touchdowns.

Tim Houlihan hauled in 155 yards and two touchdowns.

Freshman Andre Casas (Oswego, Ill.) was a perfect four-for-four on extra-point attempts and recovered a fumble on the opening play of the day.

The Falcons picked off two passes with sophomore Breven Palpallatoc (Las Vegas, Nev.) returning his for 48 yards and senior Troy Stewart (Trevor, Wis.) celebrating senior day with an interception.  

Senior Connor Stoming (Germantown, Wis.) led CUW with nine tackles.

After being projected to finish in sixth place, the Falcons finished the season in fourth place in the NACC at 4-4.

CUW finishes the year with a winning record at 6-4. The Falcons have finished .500 or better for the last four seasons.
