Women's Soccer falters in second half, dealt first loss of season by Carthage

KENOSHA, Wis. – Carthage College netted four second-half goals in dealing the Concordia University Wisconsin Women's Soccer team its first loss of the 2015 season. The Falcons led 1-0 at halftime, but struggled in the second half, falling 4-1 against the Lady Reds.

THE BASICS

HOW IT HAPPENED

- The Falcons built a 1-0 lead early in the match, scoring a goal which deflected off a Carthage defender 5:14 into play. CUW sent a cross towards the net and a Carthage defender knocked it in, giving the Falcons an early advantage. CUW controlled possession early on, holding an 8-4 shots advantage in the first 45 minutes of action.

- Carthage picked up its play in the second half with the four-goal outburst. The first of those came in the 52nd minute as Rachel Post gained the goal with a header off a cross from Madeline Peno.

- The Lady Reds would score its next two goals roughly six minutes apart from one another in the 64th and 70th minutes. Maggie Washelesky gave Carthage a 2-1 lead, while Kayla McGuinness made the score 3-1, scoring off a corner kick from Corrine Brennan.

- Carthage added its final goal just 2:36 later when Post recorded her second score of the evening, making the scoreboard read 4-1.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

- The loss was the first of the season for the Falcons, which is the longest into the season CUW has gone without a setback during the Ryan Middendorf era (2003-present).

- The four goals allowed by the Falcons is the most they've given up since the 2013 campaign. On September 14, 2013 CUW was defeated by St. Norbert by a 4-3 final. The Falcons also gave up five goals in a 5-0 setback at Carthage on September 8 of that season.

- Friday's match was also the road opener for the Falcons. CUW dropped to 2-3-0 in their last five road openers, having fallen in each of its last three.

- The Falcons finished with 11 shots, seven of those on goal, all seven being saved by Abby Alm. Senior Carley Pfannerstill (Grafton, Wis.) paced the Falcons offense with three shots, two on goal. Junior Ariana Worthing (Saginaw, Mich.) faced 10 shots on goal, making six saves, three in each half.

THE OPPOSITION

- Post led all players with four shots, all four of those coming on goal, while also scoring the two goals. Brennan added two assists for the Lady Reds.

UP NEXT

- CUW will continue its difficult non-conference schedule to begin the 2015 season with a home match against No. 20 UW-Whitewater Wednesday afternoon. The Falcons and Warhawks will begin play at 4 p.m. at Fitting Field.
