Women's Soccer battles No. 14 Lake Forest to 1-1 draw

MEQUON, Wis. – The Concordia University Wisconsin Women's Soccer earned a 1-1 draw with No. 14 Lake Forest Wednesday at Fitting Field in a tremendous soccer matchup at Fitting Field. The Falcons lone goal came in the 79th minute as defender Abigail Freeland scored her third career goal, tying the match at 1-1.

THE BASICS

- Final Score: Concordia Wisconsin 1, No. 14 Lake Forest 1
- Location: Fitting Field – Mequon, Wis.
- Records: Concordia Wisconsin 2-0-2, Lake Forest 2-0-1

HOW IT HAPPENED

- The first half saw no scoring despite a combined 21 shots, five of those on goal. Each team had a couple of very strong scoring chances, but both Tabitha Ortiz (Plainfield, Ill.) and Kaylee Price kept their opponents off the board.

- The Foresters would gain a 1-0 lead just 2:30 into the second half as Nina Perkkio scored on a scramble in front of the net, which came off a Lake Forest corner kick just seconds earlier. Perkkio's score was her second of the season.

- Freeland (Grafton, Wis.) was the unlikely hero for the Falcons in tying the game at 1-1 as she launched one from 35+ yards out. The ball was placed in the upper right portion of the goal and slipped through the fingertips of Price, making the score 1-1.

- Each team had a couple chances in the overtime sessions, none better than a Lake Forest shot off the cross bar in the second extra session. The Falcons had a shot go off the crossbar in the first half of the match.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

- The draw was the first regular season draw or loss for the Foresters since the 2013 season. Lake Forest was a perfect 17-0-0 in the regular season last year and finished the year 21-1-0 with a loss in the NCAA Tournament against Aurora.

- CUW was close to getting shutout for the first time since the 2013 season, but Freeland's goal changed all of that. Her score was the Falcons latest first goal of a contest since October 14 last season, when Anna Hirssig scored with 4:15 left in a 3-1 setback against Marian.

- Ortiz got the start against the ranked Foresters and delivered with five saves in 110 minutes of action. Lake Forest had a total of 30 shots, just six of those on goal.

THE OPPONENTS

- Perkkio had the goal for Lake Forest, while also finishing with five shots, two of those on goal. Kaylee Price finished with three saves for the Foresters.

WHAT'S NEXT

- The Falcons will take to the road for the first time this season on Friday when they visit Carthage for a non-league matchup. CUW and Carthage are set for a 5 p.m. start in Kenosha.
