Scharmer, Wagner lead Women's Basketball past Alverno

MEQUON, Wis. – Audrey Scharmer and Brianna Wagner each had a double-double, as Concordia University Wisconsin defeated Alverno College, 67-49, on Friday night inside the R. John Buuck Field House.

The Falcons dominated the first half of the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference game, in large part to Scharmer and Wagner, and held a 40-15 lead at halftime. They held the Inferno to just eight points through 16 minutes and 43 seconds of action. Scharmer and Wagner became the first two players to record a double-double in the same game in program history.

Scharmer had her double-double by halftime and finished with 10 points (5-of-9 shooting) and a career-high 14 rebounds (six offensive). Meanwhile, Wagner had a career night with 23 points (8-of-10 field goals, 7-of-9 free throws), six blocks and three steals, as well as 12 rebounds (three offensive). The duo were overpowering at times and helped the Falcons finish with 34 points in the paint.

CUW's lead swelled to 28 points after sophomore Mallory Wesley (South Milwaukee, Wis.) drained a 3-pointer just over a minute into the second half. The large advantage allowed head coach Stacey Brunner-Jones to play 14 players in all, with nine finding the scoring column.

Wesley finished with nine points on three 3-pointers for CUW, while junior Megan Coenen (Green Bay, Wis.) had six points. Junior Madelyn Landgraf (Elkhart Lake, Wis.) dished out five assists, and Wesley and junior Laura Kolander (Corcoran, Minn.) each had three assists.

Nyakok Duop paced the Inferno with 10 points off the bench. Alyssa Mane had seven points, while K.D. Jones and Mollie Mikyska each scored six points. Mikyska grabbed six rebounds and Julie Gallegos had three assists to lead the visitors (6-18, 3-16 NACC).

CUW's defense was stifling in the first half and held the Inferno to 20.0 percent (6-of-30) and just 15 points. The Falcons lead stayed above 20 points the entire second half until a late basket by the Inferno. They held a 16-6 difference in second chance scoring after grabbing 12 offensive rebounds and scored 21 points off 18 turnovers. AC finished with a 34-17 advantage in bench production.

CUW (18-6, 14-5 NACC) returns to action on Tuesday for the regular season finale against Marian University at 7 pm inside the R. John Buuck Field House. Both teams are playing for seeding in the NACC Tournament, which begins on Saturday, Feb. 21 at 7 pm.
