Women's Tennis Fought Until the End

By CUW Student Assistant MaryGrace Cleinmark

MEQUON, Wis. – The CUW women's tennis team opened their 2021-2022 season with seven straight wins. The birds finished with an overall record of 10-14 (.417) and a conference record of 8-1 (.889).

The Falcons began their season off strong defeating Carroll on home turf. The flock posted a commanding 8-1 victory over the Pioneers. The duo of senior Ricki Budewitz (Watertown, Wis.) and sophomore Ashley Samuta (Glen Ellyn, Ill.) started the day off strong at No. 1 doubles with an 8-2 victory. To end the day Ricki Budewitz put out the final victory at No. 1 singles with a score of 7-6,7-5.

CUW took their rackets to the South Carolina sun in March for their spring break trip. The trip consisted of six matches. The duo of Senior Mia Andrae (Cedarburg, Wis.) and freshman Cheyanne Philips (Morris, Ill.) picked up the lone doubles point for the Falcons with an 8-3 victory on court two.

The Falcons ended their regular season play with a conference finish of second place. This led the flock to end their conference tournament run in the semifinals against the Scarlet Hawks. CUW fell short to a score of 5-2 to Illinois Tech. The lone doubles point came from court three with the team of sophomore Mallory Moen (Neenah, Wis.) and senior Elizabeth Johnson (Hubertus, Wis.). The duo won with a victory of 8-6.

In November, The Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) announced its All-NACC teams for women's tennis. The Falcons led the conference with six selections. The Blue and White had five singles selections and two doubles teams earned All-NACC honors.

The CUW women's tennis team will come back to fight in the fall.
