Edgewood captures 2009 NAC Women’s Tennis Tournament; Falcons fall to third

MADISON

The Edgewood College women's tennis team captured the 2009 NAC Women's Tennis Championship Sunday at Nielsen Tennis Stadium in Madison. The title is the second straight for the Eagles (10-1 NAC) and earns them a second consecutive trip to the NCAA III women's tennis championship in the spring by virtue of the conference's automatic qualification.

Favored Concordia, also 10-1 in the regular NAC season, got championships from singles players Erin Henrich (#1) and Kaitlyn Strehlow (#2), but the Falcon #3-6 starters could not duplicate their regular season NAC successes.

Henrich was named 2009 NAC Player of the Year. She had a 15-1 record in the regular season and was a perfect 11-0 in conference play. This is Henrich's third Player of the Year award. Strehlow, who also captured the title at No. 2 singles, was named the 2009 NAC Freshman of the Year. The rookie was also perfect in NAC play (11-0) as was 13-3 overall in the regular season.

CUW mentor Dave Mooney was named NAC Coach of the Year as voted on by his peers. In addition to a third place finish at the championship the Falcons were tied with Edgewood at 10-1 in NAC duals this season, including a 5-4 dual meet victory over the eventual champions.
