Women's Soccer routs WLC, clinches home match in NACC Tournament

MILWAUKEE - Three first-half goals, including two scored in the opening five minutes, helped the Concordia University Wisconsin Women's Soccer team roll past Wisconsin Lutheran College, 4-0, in its regular season finale Wednesday night at Warrior Soccer Field. The Falcons clinched a home match in the six-team Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference Tournament with the win.
CUW will now host sixth-seeded MSOE Sunday at Fitting Field. The time of that match is expected to be determined sometime tomorrow. The Falcons defeated MSOE, 4-0, back on October 19 as sophomore Carley Pfannerstill (Grafton, Wis.) scored twice in that contest.
On Tuesday CUW got on the board just 1:30 into play thanks to an own goal by Wisconsin Lutheran. The Falcons didn't take much longer to have one of their own players score as sophomore Emily Ciesielczyk found the back of the net 4:01 into play off a pass from Brittany Klumpp (Rubicon, Wis. – sophomore).
The scoreboard would read 3-0 at halftime when junior Anna Hirssig (Rochester, Minn.) added another CUW goal at the 19:24 mark. Hirssig's unassisted goal was her 13th of the season, which is tied for the team lead, while also being tied for third in the NACC. CUW would add its fourth and final goal late in the second half when Klumpp scored off a Pfannerstill assist.
CUW dominated play, outshooting the Warriors 36-1. The Falcons took 18 shots in each half, while holding WLC to zero shots during the final 45 minutes of play. Freshman Ariana Worthing (Saginaw, Mich.) faced zero shots on goal while playing the full 90 minutes, picking up her eighth win of the season.
Hirssig fired a team-best eight shots for the Falcons, who finished with 18 of the 36 total shots on net. Klumpp and Pfannerstill each tallied seven shots as they kept Warriors goalkeeper Kate Gucinski busy all evening. Gucinski recorded 14 saves for WLC.
The shutout was the third in the past four matches for CUW, while the other match saw the Falcons surrender just one goal. They will look to carry that momentum into their NACC Quarterfinal matchup Sunday. Live audio and stats for that contest will be available at CUWFalcons.com.
