Wrestling Competes in Gator Boots Duels

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The CUW wrestling team traveled to Nashville, Tennessee to take on the Gator Boots Duels. The Duels saw the Falcons take on colleges such as Wilmington, Luther, Huntingdon, and the University of the Ozarks.

The Falcons took their first matchup against Wilmington with a final score of 36-16. Freshman Corey Bagby (Salem, N.J.) took the matchup by forfeit along with senior Val Kochiu (Oak Creek, Wis.). 

Senior Austin Vincent (Stockton, Ill.) started his day with a 2:50 fall. Sophomore Lucas Regnier (Bradley, Ill.) took his matchup by a 4-1 decision.

In the 157-pound division, junior Jack O'Donnell (Huntington Beach, Calif.) took a 0:40 fall with junior Quinn Hoopman (Cedar Grove, Wis.) taking the 165-pound, 55-second fall. 

Sophomore Peyton Smith (Milwaukee, Wis.) dropped his matchup by a 5-14 major decision and senior Noah Hardy (McMurray, Pa.) dropped a 2:54 fall.

Senior Reid McNeill (Bristol, Wis.) was victorious in a 12-7 decision while sophomore Cam Mercer (Glenview, Ill.) was defeated by a 2:17 fall.

The next Falcon duel was with the host, Luther.

The Falcons fell to Luther by a final score of 6-28.

Bagby dropped a major decision at 0-11 in the 125-pound division. Kochiu took a 4:18 fall victory to go 2-0 in his first two matchups and the only Falcon points against Luther. Austin Vincent was edged out in a 0-2 decision while Regnier was defeated in a sudden victory one at 8-10.

O'Donnell was beaten by a 7-12 decision with Hoopman dropping a 1-16 tech fall at 6:47. Three of the last four Falcons were defeated by fall. Peyton smith fell at 2:34, junior Dalton Sell (Muscatine, Iowa) fell at 3:46, and junior Jerrell Carey (Chicago, Ill.) fell at 2:02. The last Falcon competitor, junior Alexandros Alexiades (Oswego, Ill.) was defeated by a 0-12 major decision.

The third competitor for the Falcons was Huntingdon. The Falcons fell by a final score of 23-25.  

First up for the Falcons was Bagby at 125 pounds. He fell at 3:10.

Val Kochiu jumped to 3-0 on the day with a 6-0 decision. Vincent also took a victory by forfeit.

Regnier fell at 0:29 while O'Donnell took a 17-2 tech fall victory at 2:38.

The other two Falcons that took victories were Hoopman with an 11-6 decision and sell with a 1:45 fall.

Smith, Alexiades, and Mercer were all defeated. Smith by a 2-10 major decision, Alexiades by a 7-10 decision, and Mercer by a 1:42 fall.

The last duel that the Falcons took part in was against the University of the Ozarks. U of the Ozarks took the matchup with a 30-13 final score.

Bagby lost the first matchup at a 3:51 fall along with Vincent who was defeated with a 4-12 major decision.

Going 4-0 in the duels was Val Kochiu with a 4-3 decision in his fourth matchup.

Jack O'Donnell and Peyton Smith both were victorious in their fourth matchup with O'Donnell taking the 18-5 major decision and Smith taking the 7-0 decision.

Regnier fell in his last duel by a 0-18 tech fall at 2:11. Hoopman also dropped a 5-11 decision in his final duel.

Alexiades and Carey were both defeated by falls. Alexiades fell at 1:20 and Carey went down at 4:48.

The final Falcon points came from Dalton Sell with a 19-15 decision victory.

The Falcons had a couple of "B" team matchups. Their first was a 9-37 defeat by Luther B.  

The 125-pound weight class was a forfeit from the Falcons with junior Gabe Rodriguez (Las Vegas, Nev.) taking the 7-1 decision in the 133-pound class.

The 141 and 149-pound classes were taken by Luther with freshman Bryce Rowley (Rifle, Colo.) dropping a 1-10 major decision in the 141-pound class and a forfeit in the 149.

Freshman Bryce Claypool (Morris, Ill.) was victorious in the 157-pound class with a 2:33 fall. 

Sophomore Adler Henn (Milwaukee, Wis.) was defeated in the 163-pound weight class with a 3-11 major decision.

Both junior Carson Cook (Las Vegas, Nev.) as well as Noah Hardy were defeated in their B-Team matchup. 

Cook dropped a 0-3 decision while Hardy was defeated by a 1-16 tech fall at 4:59.

In the 285-pound weight class, Carey was defeated by a 1-6 decision.

The second B-Team matchup was between the Falcons and Loras. Loras B took the matchup 33-18.  

Freshman Devin Gore (Plymouth, Wis.) took the 125-pound matchup with a forfeit. Rodriguez also took his 133-pound duel with a 0:41 fall.

Rowley was defeated by a 1:52 fall while sophomore Keith Giger (Milwaukee, Wis.) took a forfeit win.

The rest of the weight classes saw Falcon defeats with Adler Henn falling at 4:15, Cook dropping a 4-5 decision, Hardy falling at 0:42, McNeill falling at 2:10, and Carey falling at 0:22.

On top of the duels, there were some extra matches as well. In the 174-pound extra match, Carson Cook was victorious by an 8-0 major decision. 

In the 184-pound extra match, Noah Hardy was defeated by a 1:46 fall. In the 141-pound match, Bryce Rowley was defeated by a 0:40 fall. 

Jerrell Carey was victorious in the 285-pound division with an 8-3 decision.

Gabe Rodriguez dominated the 133-pound extra matches with two fall victories at 0:39 and 0:52. Bryce Claypool was defeated by a 4:21 fall in the 157-pound weight class.

The Falcons look to start the New-Year strong in their next CCIW duel with Aurora.
