Men's Hockey secures postseason berth despite shutout loss at MSOE

MILWAUKEE – For the second straight night against MSOE, a team receiving votes in the latest USCHO.com DIII Men's Hockey poll, Concordia University Wisconsin failed to score a goal. Just like Friday night, the Falcons fell to the Raiders by a 3-0 score.

Despite the loss, CUW qualified for the NCHA Tournament, set to begin next weekend, thanks to an earlier loss by Northland College. The Falcons will be the eighth and final seed in the playoffs and will take on top-seeded and regular season champion Adrian College next weekend in a two-game set. If the two teams split the two games, a mini game will follow the second contest to see who advances.

Omar Mullan scored two goals for the host Raiders on Saturday, while Gage Christianson had a power play score 1:28 into play, resulting in the game-winner. Nick Kohn was again outstanding for MSOE, making 34 saves.

The Falcons outshot the Raiders for the second straight night, finishing with 34 shots compared to 26 for their counterparts. Kohn was in the zone all weekend however, recording 12 saves in the first and 13 in the second.

CUW finished the game 0-for-4 on the power play, while MSOE was 1-for-3 with the man advantage. The Falcons were whistled just four times for eight penalty minutes, while MSOE was in the box 10 minutes on five infractions.

Sophomore Jake Hebda (Firestone, Colo.) finished with 23 saves for CUW, including nine in the first period.

A date and time for the opening game against Adrian has yet to be determined. Stay tuned to CUWFalcons.com for updates.
