Baseball gains NACC sweep in twinbill at Marian

FOND DU LAC, Wis. – The Concordia University Wisconsin Baseball team went on the road and picked up two NACC wins Saturday, sweeping Marian in a conference twinbill. The Falcons won a 4-2 game one contest before two huge innings allowed them to gain the sweep with a 16-0 game two victory.

THE BASICS

GAME ONE HIGHLIGHTS
- Senior Andrew Mueller (Horicon, Wis.) delivered a complete game gem in the opener. Mueller scattered nine hits, allowing two runs and striking out five in his fifth win of the year.

- The Falcons jumped out to an early 3-0 lead, scoring two in the first and one in the second. Sophomore Kyle Hilliard (Oak Forest, Ill.) drove in a run in the first and junior Matt Schubert (West Bend, Wis.) recorded an RBI single. Hilliard then made the score with a run-scoring single in the second.

- Marian cut the CUW lead to 3-1 in the third, but the Falcons answered with an RBI double from Schubert in the top of the fifth. Marian would strike again in the bottom of the ninth before Mueller closed the door shut.

- Schubert paced the Falcons attack, responding to his move to the seven spot in the order, with three hits, including two doubles. Sophomore Nathan Thyssen (Appleton, Wis.) collected two hits, while leadoff man Dan Ranieri (Loves Park, Ill.) had a hit, walked twice and scored a run. Junior Isaac Tewes (Chaska, Minn.) also walked twice, singled and scored for the Falcons.

GAME TWO HIGHLIGHTS
- The Falcons scored seven times in the fourth and added a nine-run outburst in the sixth, rolling to a 16-0 win in game two. The run support was more than enough for junior Andrew Heideman (Bakersfield, Calif.), who threw six shutout frames. Heideman allowed just three hits, adding a pair of strikeouts versus three walks in his third win of the year. Sophomore Eric Dubek (Lockport, Ill.) tossed a perfect seventh inning, striking out two.

- Tewes had a huge game for the Falcons, going 2-for-5 with five RBI. He delivered a pair of two-RBI singles, one in each big inning, while adding a sac fly sixth. Schubert tallied three more hits and drove in two for the Falcons, while sophomore Justin Barney (Kenosha, Wis.) entered midgame and was 2-for-2 with a double and two RBI.

- Ranieiri collected three hits, scored twice and doubled twice and Schubert also doubled in the win. Thyssen posted three hits, scored twice and Hilliard chipped in two more hits and two runs scored. Junior Bryan Thomas (Lowell, Ind.) also had a strong game, going 1-for-2 with three walks, three runs scored and two RBI. Sophomore Anthony Lombardi (Kildeer, Ill.) also crossed the plate twice for CUW.

- CUW will return to action tomorrow in a home doubleheader against MSOE. First pitch from Kapco Park is set for noon.
