Schuman's strong pitching helps Baseball salvage split with Dubuque

TUCSON, Ariz. – Sophomore Joey Schuman pitched six strong innings in game two, helping the Concordia University Wisconsin Baseball team salvage a split with Dubuque Tuesday in Tucson. The Falcons posted a 4-2 game two win after falling 5-4 in extra innings in the opener.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Schuman (New Lenox, Ill.) tossed six strong in the game two win, limiting the Spartans to six hits. He threw 58 of his 88 pitches for strikes, while issuing just one walk and struck out five. Sophomore Mike Magdziarz (Frankfort, Ill.) earned his first save, pitching a scoreless seventh. Magdziarz struck out the final three batters after the leadoff man reached on an error.

- CUW scored two runs in the fifth, extending its lead at the time from 2-1 to 4-1 thanks to a two-out rally. Sophomore Nathan Thyssen (Appleton, Wis.) started the rally with a double to rightcenter and was driven in by an RBI single off the bat of junior Luke Wirtz (Marshfiield, Wis.). Junior Bryan Thomas (Lowell, Ind.) then delivered an RBI triple down the leftfield line, plating Wirtz.

- The Falcons scored first in game two thanks to an RBI single from freshman Eric Paz (Kenosha, Wis.) in the second inning, plating senior Nate Van Ells (Greendale, Wis.). CUW then went up 2-0 on a sacrifice fly from junior Mitchell Dubnicka (Hartland, Wis.), scoring junior Matt Schubert (West Bend, Wis.).

- Thyssen and Thomas each had two hits in the game two win, pacing the Falcons offense, which finished the game with a total of seven hits.

- The Falcons dropped the opener 5-4 in extra innings. CUW gave up three unearned runs in the game, including the game-winner in the bottom of the ninth. Senior Andrew Mueller (Horicon, Wis.) was the pitcher of record as he tossed the final 1.1 innings, punching out a pair of batters.

- CUW got several quality innings from relief pitching in the opener, including freshman Brett Kolacki (Midlothian, Ill.). Kolacki threw three innings, allowing one unearned run. Sophomore Andrew Gibbons (Markesan, Wis.) then came on for a scoreless frame, while sophomore Scott Plachinski (South Milwaukee, Wis.) added 2.1 scoreless innings.

- The Falcons trailed 4-1 in the opener before rallying for a three-run fifth inning to tie the game. Sophomore Dan Ranieri (Loves Park, Ill.) started the rally with a triple and scored on an RBI single by sophomore Kyle Hilliard (Oak Forest, Ill.). Schubert doubled in Hilliard, while senior Jordan Mathiebe (Brillion, Wis.) scored on an RBI groundout from sophomore Michael Szeszol (Lake Bluff Ill.).

- CUW has an off day Wednesday before taking on Augsburg in a doubleheader Thursday morning. First pitch is scheduled for 10 am (PST).
