Baseball swept by Dominican in NACC twinbill

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. – The Concordia University Wisconsin Baseball team was swept by Dominican University in a NACC doubleheader Sunday at Boomers Stadium. The Stars won the opener 8-5 before completing the sweep with a 12-11 game two victory.

The second game saw Dominican score in the bottom of the eighth on an RBI double from Lucas McKinney to take the one-run lead. DU then retired the Falcons in order in the top of the ninth to hold on for the sweep.

Freshman Nathan Thyssen (Appleton, Wis.) and senior Joel Sharon (Milwaukee, Wis.) paced the Falcons offense. Thyssen had two hits, including a 3-run home run in the second inning, while Sharon went 4-for-5 with three runs scored, two doubles and two RBI. Freshman Noah Greenberg (Libertyville, Ill.) added three hits and two RBI in the game, while sophomore Bryan Thomas (Lowell, Ind.) also drove in a couple runs.

After trailing 2-1 after the first of game two, the Falcons struck for five runs in the top of the second, making the score 6-2. Dominican would storm back with three-run innings in both the second and third, holding an 8-6 lead after three complete.

The Falcons would retake the lead with three runs in the top of the sixth, while adding one more in the seventh, making the score 10-8 heading into the seventh-inning stretch. DU answered with three in the seventh, while CUW would tie the game on an RBI single from Greenberg in the eighth. The Stars had one last answer, on the RBI from McKinney, resulting in the game two win.

Andrew Heideman (Bakersfield, Calif.) was the pitcher of record in game two after throwing two relief innings. He was one of four pitchers used in the second game for CUW, while the Falcons also used three in the opening game. Tyler Brown picked up the win for the Stars, throwing 2.1 innings of scoreless relief.

The opening game saw Dominican jump out to a 5-0 lead after one. The Falcons trailed by five or more runs most of the game, scoring three runs over the final two innings, making the final score 8-5.

Thyssen again had two hits for the Falcons as he and Sharon each doubled in the opener. Freshman Kyle Hilliard (Oak Forest, Ill.) added two hits while Isaac Tewes (Chaska, Minn.) drove in a pair of runs.

Chance Emlund picked up the win for the Stars, throwing seven innings and allowing just one earned run. Senior Tyler Adams (Jackson, Wis.) got the start for the Falcons and was the pitcher of record as he allowed five earned runs. Senior Michael Winter (Cedarburg, Wis.) turned in 4.1 innings of quality relief, allowing one earned in his time on the mound.

CUW will return home and host UW-Oshkosh on Tuesday at Kapco Park. First pitch between the Falcons and Titans is set for 1 p.m.
