Buuck, Thyssen collect NACC Baseball weekly awards

WAUKESHA, Wis. – Freshmen Carter Buuck and Nathan Thyssen have been named the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference Baseball Student-Athletes of the Week, the league announced Monday evening.

Buuck (Hillsboro, Ore.) was named the Pitcher of the Week after hurling eight shutout innings against Saint John's University Friday in Tucson. The rookie southpaw did not earn a decision in the game, but kept the Falcons in the game as the offense struggled. CUW would ultimately win 1-0 in 10 innings.

Buuck struck out eight batters compared to just one walk on the mound, while scattering five hits. The eight shutout innings allowed him to continue his scoreless innings streak, which reached 15 to begin his CUW career. He also threw seven shutout innings against Carroll a week prior in Tucson.

Thyssen (Appleton, Wis.) was the Falcons top hitter last week, batting .500 over the team's final five games in Arizona. He helped lead CUW to a 3-2 mark over those five contests thanks to a .500 batting average (10-for-20).

The freshman outfielder collected eight hits in the Falcons final three games, going 8-for-13 during that stretch. He tripled in three games over the week, bringing his season total to six in 10 games, just one shy of the CUW single season record.

Thyssen's biggest hit of the week was his final one, when he belted a solo home run over the rightcenter field wall in the top of the 11th against Central. The first home run of his young career, ended up as the game-winner in a 10-9 extra-inning victory.

Buuck, Thyssen and the rest of the Falcons will return to the diamond tomorrow in the 2015 season opener. CUW hosts North Park at 3 pm at Kapco Park.
