Baseball routs Northland, 19-1, for third straight win

MEQUON, Wis. – The Concordia University Wisconsin Baseball team posted its highest scoring effort since the 2010 season in a 19-1 rout of Northland College Wednesday at Kapco Park.

Freshman Nathan Thyssen (Appleton, Wis.) continued his strong start to his collegiate career as he paced the Falcons with six RBI in the win. Thyssen went 2-for-3 and had a bases-clearing double in an eight-run third inning. Freshman Justin Barney (Kenosha, Wis.) added four RBI and also had a bases-clearing double in the third. The Falcons 19 runs were the most since scoring 20 in a victory over Maranatha Baptist University on May 3, 2010.

The Falcons offense pounded out 16 hits in the win as Brandon Seifert (Germantown, Wis.), Sean Barry (New Lenox, Ill.), Thyssen and Kyle Hegeman (New Berlin, Wis.) all collected a pair of hits. CUW finished with five doubles in the game one each from Thyssen, Barney, Hegeman, Bryan Thomas and Noah Greenberg (Libertyville, Ill.).

Freshman Joey Schuman (New Lenox, Ill.) picked up his second win of the season in a very efficient five innings of work. Schuman allowed just three hits, while striking out one and walking none. He threw just 43 pitches, 32 of those for strikes, while facing two over the minimum in his five innings of work.

Sophomore Dylan Gausman (Eagan, Minn.) tossed three innings in relief for the Falcons. He struck out seven batters, while allowing two hits and walked a pair. Senior Michael Klaver (Germantown, Wis.) threw the final inning of the game, tossing a scoreless ninth.

The Falcons jumped on Northland right away with a three-run first inning. Thomas (Lowell, Ind.) had a 2-RBI double in the inning, while Barney drove in Thyssen with a sac fly to make the score 3-0.

The third inning was the big one for CUW as it plated eight runners to take an 11-0 lead. Thyssen and Barney had the 3-RBI doubles in the frame, while Hegeman and Greenber also had RBI doubles. CUW had just the four hits in the frame, all four being doubles. The Falcons were also aided by several Northland walks as Jacks' pitchers issued 15 free passes throughout the day.

Freshman Ryan Donegan (Oak Forest, Ill.) collected his first career hit in the win and scored three runs. Junior Mitchell Keiper (Glendale, Wis.) also had his first career hit, as did Martin Rodriguez (Machesney Park, Ill.) and Barry.

The Falcons will return to Kapco Park Saturday for the NACC opener, a doubleheader against defending league champion, Concordia Chicago. The rematch of last year's NACC Championship game is set to begin at noon.
