2022-23 Moments of the Year (No. 9): Women’s Basketball Beats Lakeland at the Buzzer

MEQUON, Wis. – The 2022-23 athletic year was another successful one for the Concordia Wisconsin Athletic Department. The Falcons won and contended for conference championships in many sports and put together an impressive list of great achievements. As in years past, the Department of Athletic Communications tries to sort through all the great moments and give you, the fans, top stories from the past year.

The list of stories was compiled by the Department of Athletic Communications and, like all lists, is subject to debate. The top stories will be revealed over the next few days, with stories being released on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. The top story will be released on August 4.

The CUW women's basketball team advanced to the NACC Semifinals with a thrilling buzzer-beater victory over Lakeland in an exciting back-and-forth matchup.

The Muskies came out firing, taking an early 9-0 lead in the game's first three minutes. But the Falcons responded with a 13-4 run and tied the game at 13 with a layup from senior Reagan Obry (Neenah, Wis.). Lakeland closed the quarter with five points and held the 18-13 lead following the first quarter.

The second quarter saw the Muskies hold on to their lead, as Lakeland headed into the half with the 35-28 lead.

Coming out of halftime, CUW put together a solid third quarter and tied the game with 2:34 left following a free throw from Senior Aubrey Buchholtz (Seymour, Wis.). The Falcons outscored Lakeland 20-15 in the third quarter.

Heading into the fourth, Lakeland held a slim 50-48 lead.

With 8:43 remaining in the game, Aubrey Buccholtz tied the game at 50 with a layup and assist from fellow senior Emily Hafemann (Hales Corner, Wis.).

Hafemann scored seven-straight points for the Falcons to push the lead up to 57-52. Aubrey Buccholtz extended the Falcon's lead to 63-54 after draining back-to-back threes.

The Muskies fought until the end and tied the game at 72 with seven seconds left.

With the Muskies applying full-court pressure, the Falcons quickly advanced the ball down the court as Emily Hafemann found sophomore Lindsey Lonigro (Deerfield, Wis.) underneath the basket. As time expired, Lonigro drained the shot to give CUW the 74-72 win and lift them to the NACC Tournament Semifinals.

In that contest, Lakeland had no answer for Emily Hafemann as she totaled a whopping 35 points on 10-16 shooting. Meanwhile, Aubrey Buchholtz added 16 points and led the Falcons with seven rebounds off the bench.
