Falcon Spotlight: Emily McCormick

Hometown: Waukesha, Wis.

High School: Waukesha West

How long have you played this sport?
Since I was in seventh grade, so about eight years.

When and why did you first pick up a racket?
I've had an interest in it ever since I was little. It started with family vacations in Florida. Where we were staying, there were tennis courts so my family and I would play there.

Why CUW?
I chose it because it's close to home. It's a good location and of course the lake is great, too.

What do you love about playing for CUW?
I love being on a team. My teammates are really positive. I love having the opportunity to play and just feel really blessed to be part of it.

Do you have a role model?
My mom. She is my best friend. She is who I want to be when I grow up because she inspires my faith.

Name two things on your bucket list:
Travel around Australia and watch the U.S. Open.

Who is your favorite tennis player ever?
I can't really pick one but I like Rafael Nadal, Gael Monfils and Serena Williams.

Players that grunt when playing tennis - effective or annoying?
Overall, annoying but sometimes it's needed only if it's within good reason.

What does it mean to be a student-athlete to you?
Lots of time management.

Name your biggest blunder while in the game?
There was one time when I was serving and l threw my racket because I lost my grip. Everyone thought I was just really mad. Looking back on it, you can't do anything but laugh.

If you gave tips to incoming players, what would they be?
Just have a lot of fun and don't take everything too seriously. Really put forth an effort. As a senior and a captain, I really do what I can to help others.

After the season is done and over, and people go through the archives, how do you want them to remember you?
That I was a solid player and that I gave my all every time I played.

How do you feel now that we have tennis courts back on campus?
I didn't mind that we had to travel for practice and matches last year because it wasn't really that far away. However, it's nice to have a change of scenery and a place to call home.

Do you have any fears on the tennis court?
I have really high expectations while on the court, so I fear not playing my best.

What are you expecting in life post-graduation?
Just to find a job I love; not one just for the paycheck, but for something I want to do.
