Softball Rocks the Regents

ROSCOE, Ill. – The Concordia Wisconsin softball team finally returned to the diamond for the first time in 10 days on Monday evening. The Falcons rumbled over Rockford with an 8-0, 13-1 sweep to improve to 9-7 on the year and 3-1 in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference. The Regents fall to 9-7 and 2-4 in the conference.

The Falcons blew open game one with seven runs in the first inning.

Senior Claudia Utz (Lockport, Ill.) opened the scoring with a blast up the middle just over the pitcher's glove with the bases loaded that plated senior Sydney Erdmann (Geneva, Ill.) and senior Madi Wheat (Coweta, Okla.) with the assistance from the field.

Junior Megan Bloyer (Oregon, Wis.) then cleared the bases at the next at-bat with a home run over the fence in left field and scored junior Jess Pozezinski (Lake Villa, Ill.) and Claudia Utz.

Senior Emily Walters (Waupun, Wis.) crushed the ball out to center field enabling junior Jasmine Freeze (Bolingbrook, Ill.) to trot across home plate.

The second sacrifice fly of the inning came in Sydney Erdmann's second at-bat of the inning with a shot to left field that scored senior Gabi Gaziano (Beloit, Wis.).

Freshman Gianna Carone (Crystal Lake, Ill.)  kept the Rockford bats silenced with only two hits in the contest. She also struck out three Regents and did not allow a walk in the victory.

The final run of game one came off the bat of Lexi Bridenhagen on a single into the gap in left-center field that allowed the speedy sophomore Julia Moker (Hubertus, Wis.) to scurry across home plate from second base.

Madi Wheat was so fast on the base path on Monday that she stole second base in the first inning, but was also rumored to have stolen the sun for a brief period during the afternoon. The National Weather Service clarified it was a solar eclipse and not Madi Wheat.

Jess Pozezinski had the first hit in game two and made it count. The Illinois native sent the ball cruising over the fence in center field and also scored Wheat after she reached on a walk.

The Birds added to the lead in the first inning when Megan Bloyer struck again with a double to center field that scored Claudia Utz from second base. Utz reached second after reaching on a single through the left side of the infield and stealing second base.

Megan Bloyer cleared the bases in the second inning with a double deep into the gap in left-center field that scored Sydney Erdmann, Madi Wheat and Jess Pozezinski.

Jasmine Freeze smacked the ball over the glove at shortstop to score freshman Jenna Shadoski (Janesville, Wis.) from third base on the single.

Sophomore Rylie DuVal (Elgin, Ill.) added to the lead with a single to center field that plated junior KianaMarie Taccad (Chicago, Ill.) from second base.

Megan Bloyer continued her productive evening in the third inning with a double down the right-field line that scored Sydney Erdmann and Jess Pozezinski.

Rylie DuVal continued with the scoring with a single to right field that landed sophomore Taylor Jacobson (Kenosha, Wis.) and Megan Bloyer on home plate.

The Regents scored their lone run of the day on a sacrifice fly in the third inning.

The Falcons claimed the run back in the top of the fourth inning when Julia Moker showed her speed and she scored on a wild pitch.

Four Falcons finished with a multi-hit performance. Megan Bloyer led the contest with three hits and six RBI.

Freshman Emma Shellstrom (San Diego, Calif.) ripped through the Rockford lineup with seven strikeouts in four innings. The California native only allowed three hits in the victory. Jasmine Freeze came in for the fifth inning and finished with two strikeouts.

The Blue and White tied for the best performance of the year with four stolen bases in game two. Sydney Erdmann, Julia Moker, Claudia Utz and Taylor Jacobson all stole a base. The stolen base was the first as a Falcon for Jacobson.

The Falcons look to soar again in the home opener on Wednesday afternoon against Edgewood.
