No. 22 Softball Brings Out the Brooms in the Florida Finale

LEESBURG, Fla. – The 22nd-ranked Falcons flexed their muscles on Thursday in the spring break finale for the Falcons. The Blue and White downed Maryville 5-2 and FDU-Florham 8-0 to bring out the brooms on Thursday. The Falcons have won their last six games to close the Florida trip at 6-1 and improve to 12-1 on the year.

Junior Claudia Utz (Lockport, Ill.) threw the first punch on Thursday with a double to left field that scored sophomore Madison Wheat (Coweta, Okla.). Freshman Jess Pozezinski (Lake Villa, Ill.) then scored Utz on a single through the left side of the infield.

The Scots then tied the game in the bottom of the third inning.

The Falcons soared in the eighth inning and kept the base runners moving.

A single from freshman Megan Bloyer (Oregon, Wis.) singled to right field to safely get Claudia Utz across home plate.

The bat of junior Gabbi Gaziano (Beloit, Wis.) scored Megan Bloyer and Jess Pozezinski.

Senior Gina Followell (Romeoville, Ill.) and the CUW defense closed the door on the Scots and secured the victory. Followell finished with 18 strikeouts in the victory.

The birds outhit Maryville 10-3 on Thursday. Madison Wheat finished with a game-high three hits.

The Falcons hit early and often to start game two against FDU-Florham.

Senior Kelsey Bollon (Orangeville, Ill.) was the queen of clearing the bases against the Devils.

In the first inning, she blasted a double to left field to score Madison Wheat and junior Sydney Erdmann (Geneva, Ill.).

The Illinois native then smacked a double to center field that cleaned Madison Wheat, Sydney Erdmann and junior Abby Kerrins (Cullom, Ill.) off the bases in the second inning. Claudia Utz sent Bollon home on a single into the gap in left field.

Utz called game in the sixth inning with a triple that scored sophomore Nicole Grove (Sussex, Wis.) and freshman Tori Plowman (Orangeville, Ill.) to end the game at 8-0.

Senior Nicki Becker (Brodhead, Wis.) was string again in the circle on Thursday with 10 strikeouts against the Devils.

Kelsey Bollon hit three of the Falcons' nine hits in the victory.

The Falcons will fly north and host Carthage on March 24.
