Lakeland finishes off CUW football 29-7
Howards Grove
The most difficult season in Concordia football history came to a
close with a 29-7 loss at Lakeland this afternoon.
The host Muskies who netted a safety at the 9:37 mark of the first
period, added their initial touchdown just 19 seconds later, and
then another 7 points just :90 after that as they jumped out to a
16-0 lead less than six minutes into the game.
CUW got their only points of the afternoon when Jonathon
Johnson completed a 7 play 45 yard drive with a one yard run near
the end of the first period to make it 16-7 Muskies.
The score remained the same until Lakeland drove 70 yards to
paydirt at the end of the third quarter.
The Muskies added their final points after a Concordia turnover
gave them the ball at CUW's 6 yard line in the game's final
minutes.
Lakeland, which finished 4-6, more than doubled Concordia's
offensive output (348- 170) and forced Greg Etter's team into 5
turnovers including a trio of interceptions.
"We played pretty well defensively in conference play and I'm proud
of those guys," said head coach Greg Etter.
Conference stats back up Etter's claim as CUW ended up tied for FIRST in NAC yards allowed, but could not generate enough offense. One final play separated CUW from victory against Aurora and Wisconsin Lutheran.
"We were definitely snake-bitten this year but now it's time to celebrate individual all conference successes and get ready for next season."
