LOVES PARK, Ill. – The Concordia University Wisconsin Baseball team went on the road to play two games against Rockford University Saturday, falling in both. The Regents won the opener 5-3 before taking game two, 12-2 in seven innings, sweeping the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference doubleheader from the Falcons.
CUW had early leads in both games, seeing its lead erased in the sixth inning of game one and the fifth frame of game two. Rockford used a seven-run fifth and a four-run sixth in the nightcap to down the Falcons via the 10-run rule.
Senior Beau Burgert (Oshkosh, Wis.) paced the Falcons offense on Saturday, collecting two hits in each game. Freshman Tyler Crass (Glendale, Wis.) and junior Brandon Seifert (Germantown, Wis.) added two hits in the opener, while junior Kyle Hegeman (New Berlin, Wis.) and freshman Mitchell Dubnicka (Hartland, Wis.) added a pair of hits in game two. Freshman Matt Schubert (West Bend, Wis.) belted his first career home run in game one and scored two of the team's three runs.
In the opening game junior Joel Sharon (Glendale, Wis.) turned in his fourth quality start of the season for CUW, allowing three earned in six innings of work. Sharon also surrendered one unearned run, which proved costly as he was credited with the loss. Freshman Dylan Gausman (Eagan, Minn.) came on for two innings of relief, striking out two. Kaleb Rich got the win for RU, despite walking seven batters in six innings of work.
Rockford used a two-run sixth inning to take a 4-3 lead in the opener and added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth. Bobby Barrera recorded the go-ahead, two-run single for the Regents in the sixth. The two-run loss was the Falcons seventh straight setback by two runs or less.
Game two saw Rockford finally solve Falcons pitcher, junior Tyler Adams (Jackson, Wis.) in the fifth inning. The Regents plated seven in the frame, including a two-RBI triple from Chris Senn and a two-run double off the bat of Brian Wiest. Kyle Pisano got the win for Rockford, allowing one earned in six strong innings.
CUW could not take advantage of Rockford's mistakes in either game as the Regents made nine errors on the day. The Falcons committed four errors themselves, three in game two.
CUW (6-14, 2-8 NACC) will look to turn things around tomorrow in a home NACC doubleheader against MSOE. First pitch is set for noon.
