Ambrocio finishes eighth at NCAA Championship

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – Offense was tough to come by for Sean Ambrocio on Saturday at the NCAA Division III Wrestling Championship, as he finished in eighth place overall at the U.S. Cellular Center.

It was the second-consecutive year Concordia University Wisconsin had a wrestler advance to the second day and become an All-American.

Ambrocio (junior, San Antonio, Texas) entered the day with hopes of finishing as high as third place. His eighth-place finish is the best of his career at the NCAA Championship.

The 125-pounder's first match was against Robert Bidlingmaier (Olivet College) on mat one to begin the session. Bidlingmaier controlled the bout from the beginning by riding on top and scoring points often. Ambrocio would lose by major decision, 13-0.

After a nearly three hour break, Ambrocio competed against top-seeded and second-ranked Paul Bewak (Johns Hopkins University), who he faced in his first match of the NCAA Championship on Friday morning. Ambrocio scored a two-point reversal in the second period and a two-point takedown in the third period, but it wasn't enough as Bewak won by decision, 10-4.

Ambrocio ends his season as an All-American and with a 19-7 overall record. He also became a three-time National Qualifier.
