Regan, Slater lift Women's Hockey to 3-2 win over St. Scholastica

MEQUON, Wis. – This is what the Concordia University Wisconsin Women's Hockey team was looking for. After an end to January that saw them go 0-2-3 in five NCHA games, the Falcons were able to get a close win in NCHA play, defeating St. Scholastica 3-2 at the Ozaukee Ice Center.

Sophomore Bridget Slater made 35 saves and junior Chelsea Regan scored the game-winning goal 5:34 into the third period to life the Falcons to the one-goal victory. It was their first NCHA win since November 15, but the Falcons certainly have been playing some good hockey as of late, battling several of the top teams in the NCHA.

Regan (Oakdale, Minn.) finished the game with a season-best two points, including her first goal of the year. The Falcons and Saints were tied at 2-2 heading into the third period, thanks to a second period that saw each team score twice. In the third, Slater made 11 saves, including a few after the Saints pulled their goalie with 1:26 remaining in regulation.

Junior Alexis Machuga (Rochester Hills, Mich.) added two points in the win, including assisting on the Regan game-winner. Machuga also scored a power play goal 11:17 into the second to tie the game at two.

The Saints would get on the board scoring 42 seconds into the second period on a power play goal by Taylor Guzzo. That lead would hold until the 5:14 mark of the second when senior Sammi Reiter (Stillwater, Minn.) netted a power play score, assisted by Regan and senior Elizabeth Otto (Stillwater, Minn.).

Just 1:25 after the Falcons tied the game, Nikki Logergren of CSS put her team back up one. That lead would again hold for a little while, but Machuga answered with her goal, assisted by sophomore Brittany Sticha (Lonsdale, Minn.) and senior Emily Heckendorf (Merrill, Wis.).

The Falcons power play has certainly improved over the last two games as they finished 2-for-6 on Friday night, resulting in four power play scores of their last two games. The Saints were 1-for-3 with the extra skater. Kristen Hunt was in goal for the Saints and made 24 saves.

CUW will be back in action tomorrow afternoon when it hosts Finlandia in another NCHA matchup. Saturday's game will also be Senior Day as the Falcons six seniors will be honored. Puck is set to drop at 2 p.m.
