Falcons upset No. 16 St. Thomas to earn Tuesday split in Florida

CLERMONT, Fla. – Senior catcher Abbie Goetsch delivered a game-winning single to lead the Concordia University Wisconsin Softball team past No. 16 University of St. Thomas as the Falcons split a pair of games Tuesday afternoon. CUW dropped its second contest to Whitworth University, 8-2.

Goetsch (Grayslake, Ill.) capped off the Falcons rally in the bottom of the seventh to secure the victory. CUW entered the inning tied 4-4 but singles by senior Cara Landherr (Waukesha, Wis.) and juniors Stephanie Kramer (Fond du Lac, Wis.) and Alyssa Robison (Roselle, Ill.) loaded the bases for Goetsch. The senior responded with a single to right center field, giving CUW the upset win.

The Falcons held a 4-1 lead entering the seventh against the Tommies before they plated three runs in the frame to tie the score at 4-4.

Junior pitcher Jamie Schuh (Freedom, Wis.) was solid in the circle for CUW as she worked five-plus innings, striking out five and allowing just one earned run. Freshman Melissa Perkins (Park Forest, Ill.) finished the game for the Falcons and was credited with the win.

CUW (4-8) followed its win against St. Thomas with a loss versus Whitworth (16-11), 8-2. Stats have not yet been provided for either game.

The Falcons will conclude their Florida trip with a pair of games tomorrow against Carroll University and No. 14 Carthage College.
