Men's Lacrosse wins program record seventh straight

MEQUON, Wis. – The wins just keep coming for Concordia University Wisconsin. Derek Brueske recorded six points on Wednesday to help the Falcons win a program record seventh consecutive with an 18-5 decision over Beloit College at Fitting Field during non-conference play.

CUW hasn't lost in over three-and-a-half weeks, including four victories on its home turf. The win over the Buccaneers was much like the others during the winning streak, as the Falcons charged out to a commanding 8-3 halftime lead and never looked back.

The Falcons had 11 different players finish with a point and four goalies combined to make 10 saves. They also scored seven-straight goals after the intermission to put the game out of reach. CUW ended with three man-up scores, all in the fourth quarter, and outshot BC by a 45-18 margin, including 25-15 margin on goal.

CUW again was unselfish on the offensive end of the field, as they assisted on 12 of their 18 goals.

Brueske (junior, Hopkins, Minn.) led all players with six points (three goals, three assists), while freshman Colin Raley (Inverness, Ill.) had a career-high-tying four goals. Senior Sam Wladyka (Winnipeg, Manitoba) recorded a hat trick and senior Justin Krause (Hartland, Wis.) had two goals and two assists.

Defensively, sophomore Mark Wilson (Calgary, Alberta) caused a career-best three turnovers and the Falcons held a 28-17 advantage in ground balls. Sophomore Danny Bundra (Lake Zurich, Ill.) won 17-of-27 faceoffs and picked up five ground balls.

Sophomore Thomas Mueller (Prior Lake, Minn.) improved to 4-0 between the pipes after making eight saves in just over 51 minutes of action. A trio of goalkeepers finished the game for the Falcons, including freshman Nick Hepting (Kingwood, Texas) who made a pair of saves.

Matt Kelly led the Buccaneers (5-4) with two goals, while three others had a marker. Jack Jenkins won 10 faceoffs and picked up a team-best six ground balls. Jake Trainor caused three turnovers.

Both teams were efficient in clearing the ball, as CUW finished 17-of-18 and BC was 17-of-19. The game was played cleanly until the final quarter when there were six penalties called on the Buccaneers.

CUW returns to action on Saturday for a 12 p.m. CDT Midwest Lacrosse Conference game against the College of Mount St. Joseph.
