Falcons Fall to Carroll

WAUKESHA, Wis. – On Tuesday afternoon, the Concordia Wisconsin baseball team traveled in-state to take on the Pioneers of Carroll College. The Pioneers came away with the 9-8 victory and improve to 3-1, while the Falcons fall to 0-4.

CUW took an early 1-0 lead in the third inning off a sacrifice fly RBI from senior Daniel Hahn (Cudahy, Wis) to right field, which brought home fellow senior Johannes Haakenson (Janesville, Wis). 

Following Haakenson's at-bat, senior Sean Tillmon (Plainfield, Ill.) and junior Jimmy Juergensen (Cedarburg, Wis.) both added singles. With runners on first and second, freshman Matt Miller (Fredonia, Wis.) hit a double to center field, bringing home Tillmon and extending the Falcon's lead to 2-0 in the third inning.

The Pioneers responded with two runs in the bottom of the third and tied the game at 2-2.

To lead off the fourth inning, Concordia sophomore Kyle Flynn (Nashville, Tenn.) doubled with a hit to right-center field. Then, senior Brandon Niedfeldt (Roscoe, Ill.) bunted for a single. With runners on the corners, Johannes Hakkenson singled to left field, giving the Falcons the 3-2 lead.

The Falcons extended their lead to 6-2 in the fourth inning with a triple from Sean Tillmon that scored two and a sacrifice fly RBI from Jimmy Juergensen.

Carroll answered in their half of the inning with a two-run home run, cutting the Falcon's lead to 6-4. 

In the sixth inning, CUW was able to tack on two more runs and bring their lead to 8-4, following a sacrifice fly RBI from Daniel Hahn and a Sean Tillmon single. 

The Pioneers responded with two more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, courtesy of their second two-run home run of the game bringing the score to 8-6 heading into the bottom of the seventh.

After a quick seventh inning for the Falcons, Carroll added three runs off a pair of walks followed by a single, a sacrifice fly, and another single, giving Carroll the 9-8 lead.  

The Falcons were unable to score in the eighth or ninth inning. 

Freshman Tyler Bartczak (Crestwood, Ill.) finished his first career start on the mound with four strikeouts. On the offensive end, Sean Tillmon recorded three hits and three RBIs, while Johannes Haakenson had three hits and an RBI. Jimmy Juergensen finished with two hits and an RBI, while Daniel Hahn had one hit and two RBIs.

Concordia Wisconsin will play in Tucson, Arizona, versus the Firebirds of Carthage College at 12:30 PM MST on March 12th.
