Acrobatics & Tumbling competes in first meet in program history

WACO, Texas – It was a historic night for Concordia University Wisconsin Acrobatics & Tumbling, as they competed in the first meet in program history on Saturday night against Baylor University and Quinnipiac University. The Falcons impressed the 1,453 in attendance with technical routines and athleticism inside the Ferrell Center.

"I was impressed with the way CUW performed tonight," assistant coach McKenzie Wilcox expressed. "Not only was it the first meet in program history, but it was also against two very talented teams. There was a lot of pressure facing CUW and we were able to fight hard in every event and I couldn't be prouder of this team. We've got a lot to work on before we face Oregon in two weeks, but overall I am very impressed with our efforts tonight."

CUW excelled in the acro and toss portion of the triangular, and had several routines scoring in the nine point range out of a possible 10 start value early in the night. The Falcons gained 25.70 points out of 30 possible in the three heats for acro and 23.50 in three heats out of 30 for the toss portion of the event.

It was an exciting night for the Falcons, yet a difficult one as they faced Baylor, who was chosen to finish second in the National Collegiate Acrobatics & Tumbling Association Preseason Coaches' Poll. The Bears also hired Felecia Mulkey in the offseason, who won four NCATA title with Oregon University. Quinnipiac was fifth in the NCATA preseason poll out of 12 teams.

CUW scored a 9.60 in the pyramid heat and a 9.40 in the toss heat during the four-event compulsory portion of the triangular. The Falcons tallied 26.80 points out of 40 in the compulsory event. They then scored a 9.40 in the third heat of the acro event and had 25.70 points out of 30.

The Falcons compiled a 9.45 score out of 9.95 in the third heat of the pyramid event and ended with 22.20 total points out of 28.9. During the toss event, they recorded an 8.10 score out of 8.8 in the first heat and ended with 23.50 out of a possible 27.2 for the toss event.

CUW struggled in the tumbling aspects and accumulated 39.0 points of 50.80. They did record an 8.45 score of a possible 9.20 during the open portion of the routine. The Falcons accumulated a 75.140 score in the team routine out of a possible start value at 101.830.

Baylor won five of the six events (compulsory, acro, pyramid, tumbling and team routine), while Quinnipiac captured the toss event.

CUW returns to the mat on Saturday, Feb. 21 at the University of Oregon. The meet is scheduled for 4:30 pm CDT.
