Volleyball drops pair of matches at Red Hawk Invitational

RIPON, Wis. – Concordia University Wisconsin lost a pair of non-conference matches during the opening day of the Ripon Red Hawk Invitational on Friday night at Wyman Gymnasium. The Falcons lost 3-1 (23-25, 19-25, 25-14, 20-25) to St. Norbert College before beings swept 3-0 (20-25, 15-25, 21-25) by St. Mary's University.

Senior Ashley Faber (Kewaskum, Wis.) led CUW with 16 kills, while junior Gabrielle VanBeaver (Green Bay, Wis.) recorded 14 kills. Junior Carley Valentine (De Pere, Wis.) and freshman Karina Klotz (Hubertus, Wis.) led the offense with 31 and 22 assists, respectively,

Defensively, sophomore Kelsey Paramore (Tomahawk, Wis.) dug 26 attack attempts, while Griffiths had 22 digs and Valentine recorded 10 digs. Junior Britta Duchow (Potter, Wis.) was impressive at the net with 15 total blocks in the two matches.

Match One: SNC 3, CUW 1

The Falcons loss to the Green Knights was the second of the season and in a week after playing them at the UW-Oshkosh Pizza Hut Classic last Saturday.

During CUW's (3-10) third set win it hit a match-best .257 after smashing 14 kills on 35 attempts. Overall, the Falcons hit .115. VanBeaver hit a season-high nine kills, and Faber and Valentine each finished with eight kills. Valentine assisted on 21 kills and Paramore had 20 digs.

Breanna Brocker and Heidi Spies recorded 16 and 14 kills, respectively, while Abby West had a match-high 30 assists.

The Falcons did record 13 total blocks, but five service errors and four serve receive errors.

Match Two: SMU 3, CUW 0

CUW's miscues were less than its previous match, but it couldn't get the offense going, finishing with just 26 kills in three sets.

Faber again had eight kills, while Valentine assisted on 10 kills. Duchow posted two block solos and five block assists.

Macki Fadness led all players with 17 kills and Lexi Assimos recorded a match-high 34 assists for SMU (10-2).

CUW returns to the court on Saturday for non-conference matchups against Lakeland College at noon and against host Ripon College at 2 p.m.
