Perkins shuts out SUNY Potsdam, Softball splits on final day in Florida

CLERMONT, Fla. – Sophomore Melissa Perkins threw her first shutout of the season to help guide the Concordia University Wisconsin Softball team to a split on its final day during the Florida spring trip. The Falcons defeated SUNY Potsdam 4-0 in the first game before falling 6-3 against Calvin.

Perkins (Forest Park, Ill.) scattered six hits over seven innings for the game one win. She did not issue a walk and struck out six in picking up her second win of the season.

The Falcons offense helped Perkins out early, scoring twice in the first on a RBI single from senior Alyssa Robison (Roselle, Ill.). CUW would tack on one more in the second, building a 3-0 lead after two complete.

CUW finished the game with just four hits but made the most of those in the four-run win. Robison, senior Mariah Giesseman (Sturgeon Bay, Wis.), and freshmen Sophia Kiela (Plymouth, Wis.) and Nicole Bublitz (Brown Deer, Wis.) tallied the Falcons hits.

The trip concluded with a 6-3 loss against Calvin as the Falcons fell short despite threatening with bases loaded in the sixth inning.

After the teams exchanged runs in the first, Calvin scored twice in the top of the second on a two-RBI double from Cassidy Vlot. The Knights would add three runs on a bases-clearing double from Maddie Teune in the fifth inning, taking a 6-1 lead.

CUW scored twice in the sixth inning when Robison belted a two-run double as she finished the day with four RBIs. Giesseman, who led the team with two hits, added an RBI single in the first for the Falcons, which scored freshmen Alexis Holsten (Oshkosh, Wis.).

Senior Jamie Schuh (Freedom, Wis.) took the loss, throwing four innings. Schuh surrendered three runs, but just one was earned. Junior Felicia Meyer (Lewiston, Minn.) threw the final three innings. Caitlin Callow picked up the win for Calvin, throwing 5.1 innings, while Lina Avila earned the save.
