CUW Athletics, Highland House support local first responders, health care workers with free meal

MEQUON, Wis. – Concordia Wisconsin’s Department of Athletics has donated a portion of fundraised dollars to help local first responders with a free meal beginning Thursday, April 30. The Highland House is matching that donation to help those serving on the front line in the fight against COVID-19.

The Highland House has been provided a preloaded gift card purchased by Concordia Wisconsin athletics and a first responder must simply mention the initiative when they place their order and then show proper identification when they pick up their meal. Concordia Wisconsin’s Athletic Department also hopes this spurs a grassroots movement from the community to call and add to the gift card. The Highland House can be reached at 262-243-5844 for orders or donations to the cause.

“This idea was brought to my attention and I thought it was a great way to recognize those around us that are giving of themselves to serve others,” Director of Athletics Dr. Rob Barnhill said. “These are uncertain times and now more than ever our community depends on first responders to help keep us all safe. Their commitment to serving is honorable and exemplary and we feel that this is a small gesture to show our support and appreciation.”

After briefly considering the idea that was brought to Barnhill, he made a phone call to the Highland House, who is a long-time sponsor and friend of the athletic department, to notify them the department was purchasing a gift card to help our local first responders with a free meal. Concordia Wisconsin and the Highland House have always been intertwined and this is a collaborative effort to give back to the community.

“The Highland House has been and continues to be a valuable partner of CUW athletics and the greater Mequon community. It is where the Falcons eat across the street,” Barnhill stated. “Tom DeMarsh and his staff have always been supportive of us and if we can partner with them to encourage people to thank first responders and make use of the Highland House curbside pickup then this is a winsome opportunity for all.”

With this planned partnership, Concordia Wisconsin athletics and the Highland House wants to show first responders during this difficult time of the COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic that we appreciate everything they are doing in saving lives and protecting those around us.

“Our first responders keep us safe and face hardships every day that we can only imagine,” said Tom DeMarsh, owner of the Highland House. “When CUW approached us with their plan, we were excited to help and match their contributions to keep our frontline workers fed.”

Concordia Wisconsin gives back to the community each year in various ways and this is just one example of its service efforts. Once the idea came to fruition, it only made sense to thank the local first responders. They are the brave ones during this difficult time, on the front lines fighting this virus.
