Falcons pop Pioneers in season opener

MEQUON, Wis. – The Falcons started the season in the win column with a 5-4 victory over Carroll on Friday evening. The Blue and White have now won seven-straight matches against Carroll and lead the all-time series, 8-7.

Carroll struck first at No. 1 doubles with an 8-5 victory.

Senior Rebekah Spiegelhoff (Mount Pleasant, Wis.) and sophomore Mia Andrae (Cedarburg, Wis.) tied the match with an 8-5 victory at No. 2 Doubles.

Freshman Antonina Sanna (Clinton Township, Mich.) and sophomore Ashley Saniter (Beaver Dam, Wis.) put the Falcons ahead with an 8-6 victory at No. 3 Doubles.

The Pioneers tied the match at two with a win on court two.

Mia Andrae defeated Francesca Grimes at No. 6 singles, 6-4, 6-1.

Antonina Sanna sank Carolyn Merkatoris at No. 3 singles, 6-3, 6-2.

Rebekah Spiegelhoff clinched the match at No. 5 singles with a 6-1, 6-4 victory at No. 5 singles.

Carroll closed the match with victories at No. 1 and No. 4 singles.

The Falcons return to action on Saturday in Illinois against Wartburg and North Central.
